Moved onto Barnes & Noble
November 14, 2009
Just saw my first exclusively e-book, "Be Careful What You Witch For," up for sale on the Barnes & Noble website for its e-book reader, Nook. The wonderful cover that my daughter designed looks great! If you haven't heard about the novel, it's a YA story (which, as usual, I hope adults will read with pleasure too) about Olivia, a girl who comes to visit her aunt in New York City while her parents are off making a movie. Olivia soon discovers that Aunt Tilda holds covens in her back yard late at night, and she makes friends with one of Tilda's neighbors (also a witch). All this seems to come in handy when Olivia tries to attract the attention of a boy at her new school. Unfortunately, he only has eyes for the comic book character, Wolverine. The neighboring witch-lady helps Olivia cast a simple spell on him. But now there's another problem: he won't go AWAY. So Olivia finds a book in her aunt's library that tells her how to go on to bigger, and blacker, magic. You know this won't turn out well!

books online
I have put two books online for people to read. One is titled BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WITCH FOR and is about Olivia a teenage girl who comes to visit her aunt in New York, only to find that Aunt Tilda meets with a coven in her back yard. Olivia is not sure how to react to this (Tilda has tried to keep it a secret), but then when she wants a boy at school to notice her, she gets witchy help from Tilda's neighbor. That is when the real trouble begins. There has never been (and probably never will be) a print edition of BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WITCH FOR. My agent gave up on it, but I think readers will like it. Hope you agree.
The other book is one that I wrote some time ago and I rewrote completely before putting it online. It's DR. CHILL'S PROJECT, about Allie, a girl who has been in asylums for much of her life, but is now taken to the house of Dr. Chill, who suspects she has special talents of a kind he is trying to promote for a secret government agency. There are other kids at the house, the first friends Allie has ever had, and when one of them is kidnapped, Allie and the others set out to rescue her.
You can download up to half of each book for free at either scribd.com or smashwords.com. Scribd allows you to download a file you can read on your screen or print out. Smashwords has files for Kindle, iPod, Sony reader, and other electronic devices. If you like what you read in the sample, you can download the rest for a small fee. (And I do mean small: I want people to afford them.)
Let me know what you think and in the next blog post, I'll tell you how the books are doing.
