Upstairs, the remains of servant's stairs were apparently turned into narrow-depth closets all in a row, but opening onto opposite sides of the house (hard to explain, but bear with me). On one side, the closets are 17" deep, on the other, 19". The base of the servant's stairs, of which only one stair remained when we bought the house, is 34" deep. We have never been able to figure out what happened to the other 15-17" - I keep telling everyone there must be a body in the walls!(less)

Henry David Thoreau
“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms...”
Henry David Thoreau

Robert A. Heinlein
“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.”
