With respect to generating ideas, there is no magic formula. I simply record any ideas that I have throughout my day, even if they are vague or seemingly uninteresting. The good ones will take shape gradually in my mind over time and the bad ones will fall away. You cannot rush this process. Let it take it's course.

Once I have an idea in hand, the next critical step is to bridge the ground from concept to written story. The key for me is to write a plot summary and character sketch on the order of a page or so. Of course, the exact length will coincide to the complexity and length of the story I envision. From these two items, I can then organize my thoughts and begin writing, keeping in mind that the first draft is the "free" draft. It is an opportunity to let the words flow as they will. Editing and making the story great can come in later drafts. My advice is don't be too critical on yourself until those later drafts, because, if you think about it, your own critical eye and fear of writing something that may not be great is a major contributor to writers' block in the first place. Write fearlessly instead.(less)
