Onyx Storm starts with Xaden Riorson once again keeping secrets from our FMC Violet Sorrengail and acting suspiciously, even by his standards. She’s awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of their bedroom door closing, which prompts her to get out of bed and follow him, first down a bridge and then through the tunnels that run beneath what’s called the rider’s quadrant. (IYKYK.) To investigate this further, she proceeds to eavesdrop on a conversation between Xaden and his brother Jack where she overhears them talking about none other than Violet herself. Despite the problematic chord that Jack and Xaden strike, Violet doubles down on her love and commitment to Xaden. He’s essentially sick, so like a loving girlfriend, Violet wants to help save him. And that just about sums it up for the prologue! The rest of the story picks up where the prologue leaves off, namely that this time around, it’s Violet that gets to withhold her secrets from Xaden, as the first two books more or less centered around him withholding his secrets from her. The promise of the cliffhanger at the end of Iron Flame was that Onyx Storm could go in a lot of different directions, and Yarros basically makes good on it. Perhaps the hype for the series is impossible to live up to at this point, but I’m confident that many readers will be sorely disappointed by this book if they don’t absolutely love “filler-writing.” The pacing, even with the well-executed and polished action scenes, can be best summed up as a slow burn for sure. You should also note that the traits you probably most adore about Violet are hidden behind all the sentences that make up this nearly one thousand-page tome. If you’re wondering whether you can skip to the end of Onyx Storm without missing any hugely important reveals, exposition, or plot twists, the answer is undoubtedly yes. But alas, no book is perfect, and overall Onyx Storm delivers a fun adventure read with escapism, wish fulfillment, and darker, more political overtones. You should read this book, if for no other reason, than to see how it all plays out by book 5! ...more

Yarros’ latest book is a character-driven standalone novel about a world-renowned ballerina whose life is turned upside down when she learns her late sister gave up her baby for adoption before she passed away. The twist (because there’s just always a twist) is that the baby is the niece of the FMC’s estranged first crush. The overall theme is that the main and side characters all do what they believe is right for the wrong reasons.

This is an unquestionably entertaining followup to the beloved Empyrean series. The enemies-to-lovers trope that readers loved about Fourth Wing and Iron Flame works great in this standalone novel, even though this book is clearly giving conventional-contemporary-romance-novel vibes. Comparisons to the first two books in the Empyrean series are of course inevitable, as they are what put Yarros on the map for most of her new readers ever since Fourth Wing came out in 2023. This book, Variation, is pretty long (my novel is only 155 pages whereas this one is 500+ pages), but literally no romance novels would exist if characters had perfect communication skills. More to the point, where would the suspense and intrigue even come from if two supposedly quarrelsome lovers agreed on how much they love each other for the entire duration of the book? No thank you, Linda. We want a little pumpkin spice with our latte.

The book gets off to a strong start with a scene set literally on the high seas, and from there the pacing kept me totally invested until the end. I read this masterpiece in just one day; it was that good! I loved the plot twists as well as how Yarros used some of the very techniques you’d only expect to find in an epic fantasy (like Fourth Wing or Iron Flame) to keep me hooked. For example, the mystery about whether the Venin are real is similiar to the way that the two main characters who were childhood sweethearts haven’t seen each other since high school, and then the world-building of Navarre from Fourth Wing is reflected in the lengthy, detailed discussions of ballet in Variation. You could tell a romance-turned-fantasy author, i.e., Yarros, wrote what is essentially a genre crossover here. The steamy scenes readers love about romantasy in this book were, well, steamy but without being vulgar.

As you probably know by now, anything goes in the world of publishing today. Accordingly, the book opens with the focus being on Allie and Hudson, but about halfway through the story, the narrator starts to focus on Hudson’s kid niece. Her name is Juniper, she’s ten years old, and I only mention her role in the story so it doesn’t throw you off if you thought the book was just like any other romance novel that exclusively focuses on the two main love interests. Some may not like it, but I found it to be quite creative, if a little experimental! Juniper is clearly an homage to Violet Sorrengail with the way that the whole story/world seems to stop and revolve around this one small, chosen person. Overall, “Variation” is an innovative, modern spin on the romance books that defined Yarros’ writing career long before the Empryean series ever came along, and whether you’re a day-one fan of hers or you simply can’t stand the wait until Onyx Storm comes out next month, you won’t be disappointed with this completely wholesome palette cleanser! ...more
