Revisit of 50 shades.....
I'm sitting looking out of the window at the rain lashing down. Big fat droplets of cold water. Now, I should be used to cold water, I am a scuba diver in the UK afterall but for some reason, the thought of cold, miserable rain makes me want to curl up on the sofa, light the fire and just read. Perhaps it has to do with hiding away in a fictional world for a little while. Getting lost in someone else's life is wonderful. So what have I been reading lately....
After the movie hype I decided to revisit Fifty Shades. I enjoyed the books the first, second, third time round and not so much this time and I wondered why. I guess there was the novalty factor in the beginning but for the first time I felt a little dissapointed with Ana. As the story progressed I wanted her to grow a pair and stand up a little more for herself and yet I didn't feel that way about her in the beginning. I started to ask myself the question "why has my attitude to this character changed?" The only answer I can come up with is that, I am seeing her as a real person now, thanks to the pics from the movies.
All the time I just read a story I think I forgave an awful amount because I can't relate Ana's behaviour to a living individual (I don't know a real Ana and Christian!). However, as soon as I saw the actress (her name has just left my brain, sorry) I started to put a face to the character and it becomes a little more "real". Therefore, and this is just my opinion of course, her "faults" began to feel more real and irritating.
And that's the power of writing! Good or bad, if a book can provoke reactions even after having read it many times it did it's job. All that changed, for me, was to see a real live person portraying a character to make me think differently about her. It doesn't mean I like the books any less, just provoked a different thought process now I can put a face to a name!
