The rat is the first animal of the Chinese zodiac, and many past Chinese emperors were born in the Year of the Rat. The characteristics associated with those born in the Year of the Rat are a huge indicator of how the Chinese perceive rats. Some of these traits are: leader/conqueror, well organized and systematic, controlling/dominating, deceptive and manipulative, creative, and intelligent.
