Hi John!
I'm so glad you've asked this question because Donut Guy is my favorite library story. I wish I'd asked him for more information at the time, because although I've been curious about learning more, I think I only barely looked into this back when I met him in 2008 or so. Your question has inspired me to dig deeper to see what I can find out. My first step will be to request a book called Cultural Exchange in the Cold War by Richmond (2003)--if I find anything, I'll let you know! He was an amazing person.
Thank you for reading the book and for reaching out.

I rescued Fez from a tree about 10 years ago, and since he was sort of petite at the time, I'd assumed he was a teen kitty. He was sort of curmudgeonly--maybe not quite grandpa-like, but uncle-ish. I can't remember why I thought of "Fez" except that it sort of sounds like "Fuzz," another name I call him.

Buffalo is new to our family--he is a very soft gray kitty with a goopy eye. I knew I wanted to name him after another animal and we decided against Pig, Pigeon, Owl and some others. Buffalo stuck--and he's plush because of his fur. We call him Buffy and everyone thinks he's a girl and that I really like that vampire slayer show. :) (less)

“I will tell everyone I know to come [to the library]. This place saves lives.”
Gina Sheridan, I Work at a Public Library: A Collection of Crazy Stories from the Stacks

“I stubbed my toe just as someone dropped a book into the inside drop box. As I yelped and howled in pain, a child on the other side said,

'Mommy, I think we hurt the book!”
Gina Sheridan, I Work at a Public Library: A Collection of Crazy Stories from the Stacks

“Do you ever hide books you've read over and over again because you're so sick of them?'

'Oh, definitely. When they ask for them, I say the book fairy came to get it. One time they saw one of the books at the library, so now they think the librarians are book fairies.”

Judith I love your bookshelves! I especially like your do-not-read-this-shit category--even if I like some of the books, it made me laugh.
