Part of writer's block in my opinion is not having had the life experience to take on some characters.(this is speaking of fiction of course) When I still feel nothing coming on I might sit down and write a single moment, a scene, as if creating a door into the place I'm trying to find. For me the best things come as a surprise since I'm not a heavy plotter in advance, since any plot will be changed by the needs and often unexpected deeds of the characters. I love being surprised by my characters, and have had an entire novel pivot on the whim of a tertiary character who becomes a major protagonist on their own volition.(less)
