Alfred Birney is een Nederlandse schrijver en nazaat van de voormalige kleurrijke plantersfamilie: De Birnies; een Indische familie uit Deventer. Zijn vader was afkomstig uit Surabaya en had Nederlandse, Oost-Javaanse, Chinese en Schotse wortels, vandaar de Angelsaksische achternaam. Zijn moeder was een Nederlandse. Veelvuldig terugkerende thema’s in zijn literaire werk zijn vervreemding van familie, voortdurend raadselen in verband hiermee oplossen en het onvermogen tot identificatie met moederland of vaderland. Hij publiceerde romans, novellen, verhalen, columns, essays, kritieken, toneelteksten, journalistiek werk en didactisch materiaal over gitaarmuziek.
