Lane Sanders Series and Art Heals
My next book, The Hindenburg Spy, is the fourth in the Lane Sanders series focusing on a lively take on 1930s New York City. The era was rife with difficulties and hardship, but I found that the history of the Depression tends to overlook the vibrancy, the art, the ADVENTURE that made the people not only survive, but thrive in NYC.
It had been while since I'd jumped back into these books and lived again with my characters. I realized I missed them as if they'd become friends. I also saw in profound ways that these books have an incredible message for us today as we, too, live in an era full of strife and anxiety of all kinds. As I wrote the fourth installment and reread books 1-3 honestly, the history as well as the act of creating itself gave me hope. Art took off like crazy in that era, and I can't help but get excited that we will see new bounds reached in our own. I highly recommend art --just like Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia!-- as a healer of our souls.
In each of these books, a piece of art is in the background of the novel and comes alongside a character to help them navigate the mystery and life. In The Hindenburg Spy, the incomparable world of jazz is backdrop including a fabulously spicy scene with Josephine Baker in Paris and a night on Swing Street (52nd Street) at the Onyx Club with Billie Holiday. Divine!
I will keep you posted. Keep on the lookout for a Giveaway soon! Loads of love to you magnificent readers. - Laurie

Behind the Scenes - Inspiration of The Silver Gun
I love history and "living" it through historical fiction. So often we learn about history in pockets, and we don't realize what other issues and events were going on at the same time. I felt that way about the Depression era. I thought it was all Dust-bowl and soup lines. But in the big cities, there was SO MUCH MORE going on! It was brilliant, exciting, and innovating. In spite of the Depression. What a word for us today! There was incredible art, architecture, women rising to prominent positions in the workforce, and of course a lot of dancing, music and cocktails. It was beautiful. And perhaps even more so because of the adversity of the day. Here is a video I made of Lane Sander's own neighborhood! Get a glimpse at her street, the townhouse that inspired Aunt Evelyn's, a special insight into the infamous Daley Joseph, and a lot more! Enjoy! More videos coming: Central Park, Blackwell's Island...
