You have to exercise it regularly to keep it in prime working order. Also, writing doesn't always have to be geared toward a book. It's all about thoughtfully producing any written text. I even obsess about wording my cell phone messages in interesting ways. I believe it's also crucial for writers to read a tremendous amount. I learn so much about the structure of language from reading. I have seldom read a book from which I haven't learned something about how to sting words together. Sometimes I find I learn more from a badly written book than from the best. It's a case of 'what not to do in my next book.'(less)
