Say Hello, Wave Goodbye

I haven’t posted for a while. I became lead pastor of Christ Community Church, Daytona Beach in January 2024, which is a testament to God’s undeserved tenderness towards me.

I’ve been facing some serious health challenges since then, and these are no less an undeserved kindness in their own way. You can find more information here. You may have to register to access the information, but it’s free.

My apologies for this rude interruption to the lack of posts.

Luther: In Real Time

You may have heard the story of Martin Luther, but not like this. Each podcast episode will be released 500 years to the day after the events described.

LUTHER: IN REAL TIME

Starts October 10th.

I’ve been working on this since last year with a hugely talented dream team: Rupert Wickham is playing Luther, Douglas Bond is writing, Rob Jorgensen is doing sound design, and John Cam...

PURITAN

Just to let y’all know (I’ve been in Florida three and a half years and I still can’t pull that off): our brand new documentary, PURITAN, has just been released.

My blurb:

Joyless. Severe. Fanatical. “Haunted by the fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.” That’s the Puritan reputation. But to what extent is that reputation deserved? Drawing on the latest research, and featuring interviews with some of the most celebrated scholars in the field, this beautiful and atmospheric new document...

THE PRAYER LETTER

Circumstances over the past two or three years have forced me to pray more, and depend more on God, than have been habitual for me. It’s almost as if those circumstances were by design…

If you’d like to join a cosy (if I were spinning it, I’d say “exclusive”) list of folks who’ve gamely promised to pray for me, you can do so here.

I can promise:

I won’t be spammy. I’ll send out the prayer email no more than four times a year. I won’t be clingy. You can unsubscribe any time you want. No judg...

Leaving Las Facebook. Really.

My Anglican friends will say, “No, we should stay – and reform Facebook from the inside!” [/satire]. But in a week or so, I’ll be deactivating my Facebook account.

Here are my reasons, for what they’re worth, and several of them have already been articulated in this excellent piece by John Lanchester in the London Review of Books.

1. I have a growing sense that I’m being spread too thinly as a human being. I am not designed to be omnipresent. It’s already tiring dealing with Whatsapp AND Me...

Discipleship Explored Goodies

Don’t say I don’t spoil you.

Next Thursday sees the release of the brand new Discipleship Explored series. I got a bit over-excited today and created some wallpapers for your phone, your computer, your tablet, and even your Apple Watch.

It goes without saying that these designs are not only chic but highly desirable:

The blurry photography and hairy arm really don’t do them justice.

Download the gorgeous artifacts here.

An Interview With Brant Hansen [Podcast]

Mr James Cary and I had a wonderful conversation with very funny (and nationally syndicated) radio host, Brant Hansen. So good, infact, we split it across three easy-to-enjoy podcasts.

We talk about comedy, writing, social media, Charlie Brown… and then Brant asks us some questions too.

You can find the episodes here (they’re Episodes 12, 13 and 14).

Questioning Evangelism

Episode 8 of Cooper and Cary Have Words is out, and apart from a fascinating discussion about faucets and spigots, it’s mostly about evangelism. There’s also some thoughts about why so many Christian films are a bit rubbish. If you like us, please leave us a review on iTunes! Thanking you.

The Forgotten Commandment

Episode 7 of Cooper and Cary Have Words is uploaded and waiting patiently for you.

This one’s about the most common command in the Bible, Thanksgiving, plus James interviews comedian and Christmas-o-phile Paul Kerenza.

As ever, you can join the party at Facebook. You can also tweet us or email us: cooperandcary [at] gmail.com. We promise to listen seriously and avoid any open mockery on the show.
