That's the best compliment you could give me, M! Thank you!

I do sometimes scare myself. I try to dig into my deepest fears and explore the things that make me the most uncomfortable, so I know I've done a good job when I finish a writing session feeling anxious.

Last week I was writing at a cafe. It was a scene where the main character walks through an empty house and feels a hand touch her shoulder. I'd just finished it when someone tapped MY shoulder - I made this awful noise somewhere between a gasp and a squeak. It was only a friend who'd come to say hello, but I was terrified for that half second!(less)

I think I'm a pretty average writer. Most days I write around 1,000 words an hour, but I can get up to 3,000 words in short bursts when I'm excited. Editing is the most unpredictable part of writing--the fastest I've edited a novel was three weeks, I think, and the slowest was eight months. (less)

“The massive grey tabby turned his sea-green eyes towards her and projected abject misery in the way only cats are capable of.”
Darcy Coates, The Haunting of Ashburn House

“This is a house that hasn’t seen a new soul in half a century. The walls are saturated with her; the floorboards are worn down from her feet; the very air continues to carry her presence after her death.”

House of Leaves House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski by Mark Z. Danielewski
Years ago, when House of Leaves was first being passed around, it was nothing more than a badly bundled heap of paper, parts of which would occasionally surface on the Internet. No one could have anticipated the small but devoted following this terrifying story would soon command. Starting with an odd assortment of marginalized youth -- musicians, tattoo artists, programmers, strippers, environmentalists, and adrenaline junkies -- the book eventually made its way into the hands of older generations, who not only found themselves in those strangely arranged pages but also discovered a way back into the lives of their estranged children.
