Autumn Reconnect
It’s spring in Sao Paulo. The weather changes from torrential rains to bright sunshine with scarcely a pause in between. I’ve been here just over a year now. One would think my inner biorhythm would have adjusted to the seasonal reversal. But it hasn’t. Oh, I enjoy the warmth, for sure. And I’m grateful for the sunshine, when it’s there. But a part of me still thinks it’s “autumn in New York.” The other day, when choosing a desktop picture for my computer, I realized I felt more drawn to the images of fall leaves than to the ones of summer beaches.
So, for me, inwardly, it’s back-to-school time. And that’s good. I always felt a surge of clean energy in the fall. It was time to roll up the proverbial sleeves and get back to work after the lazy, hazy days of summer. The fresh crisp air of September, the glorious changing colors of October and the profound melancholy of November always moved me to new levels of productivity and insight.
And so it is that I find myself back to writing, at work on a book I started a long time ago, way too long ago, I think. I hope to finish it this time around. I’ve found a wonderful developmental editor to work with and I’m hoping she’ll provide the support that’s been sorely missing.
I’m also looking forward to reconnecting with friends and getting to know more of my readers through Facebook. I’ve never really been active on Facebook, but that’s changing. I’ve discovered what so many others have discovered, that FB is an excellent way to keep in touch with those far and wide.
I’ve told my friends individually that I miss them, but I’ll say it out loud. I miss you all so very much. Living so far away from home has its pluses, but it also has its minuses. And distance from the people you love and trust, the people who inspire you, is one of them.
I miss the opportunity to meet readers, too. Readers provide a whole source of inspiration and feedback, sometimes hilarious, often very insightful and always welcome. The conferences provided that. Facebook now will have to do.
There are only a few hours left to the evening. I’d better get back to work on that “old” manuscript. It’s something quite different from what I’ve done before, but I think it’s a good idea and I’m enjoying working on it. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that it will get done this time around!
Ciao!
Until next time!

Black Orchid Blues: the Audiobook
Marti has uploaded the last of the files for the audiobook version of Black Orchid Blues. It’s always interesting to hear other people’s interpretation of your work. In this case, it’s quite pleasant. She has a knack for characterization, for catching the way a character sounded in my head when I was writing.
I found her at ACX. Truth be told, she found me. She began writing to me about Darkness and the Devil Behind Me. She was the first person to have shown any real interest in the project in quite some time. And she was good. I did listen to other auditions, and there were quite a few good ones, but for some reason, her voice stayed with me.
And so now, here we are. First Darkness. Now, Black Orchid Blues. I hope people will enjoy them.
Johnny Temple over at Akashic Books, by the way, was great about letting me use the wonderful cover Akashic designed for Black Orchid Blues. Meanwhile, I did a new cover for Darkness. Hope everyone likes it.

Black Orchid Blues: the Audiobook
So I wrote about 2500 words today. Not particularly good words, but words nonetheless.
And then I saw that Marti Dumas had uploaded the remaining chapters to Black Orchid Blues! Yay! She’s done a great job.
