A.M. Bostwick writes Middle Grade and Young Adult novels. Her debut middle grade novel, The Great Cat Nap, earned the 2014 Tofte/Wright Children's Literature Award from the Council for Wisconsin Writers. It also earned the Moonbeam Children's Award Bronze Medal in the Pre-Teen Fiction category. The sequel and standalone, The Clawed Monet, hit the shelves in 2016. Her young adult novel, Break the Spell, released in autumn 2015. An early draft of that book was a finalist in the 2013 Wisconsin Romance Writers of America Fab 5 Contest. She has placed in Rochester Writers' contests in 2014 and 2016 and has had short fiction appear in Black Fox Literary.

Ellis' three sly cats -- Uno, Dos, and Tres -- reminded me a bit of the Siamese cats in Lady and the Tramp. Where did you draw inspiration for all of these colorful characters throughout and the plot of the mystery?

A little known fact: In middle school, my best friend’s step-mother was actively involved with the local cat show circuit. She kindly let us tag along to the shows where we were able to watch the judging, visit with the pet owners and view all the fantastic cats. My friend and her step-mother both had Himalayan cats, named Jacquelyn and Drusilla. Unlike Uno, Dos and Tres, these were very friendly and loving cats. When writing The Great Cat Nap, I thought it would far more fun if the cats were competitive, or “catty” with each other. More like how humans sometimes act in beauty pageants or dance recitals. And it’s true, cats can be “cliquey” with one other. They are not always welcoming of newcomers or visitors. I wanted to draw on that drama for this mystery. Thanks for asking!(less)
