Dennis Liggio is the author of sixteen books, including I KILL MONSTERS, the DAMNED LIES series, THE LOST AND THE DAMNED, and the books set in the city of New Avalon. He is a veteran of the game industry, enjoys long walks on the beach while thumbing through tomes of unspeakable evil, and rumor has it that if you say his name three times in front of a mirror at midnight he will appear and give you Hostess Fruit Pies. He writes primarily in the genres of geeky absurdist humor, horror, and urban fantasy. He lives in Pflugerville, Texas with his amazing wife, awesome daughter, and four cats that act like wieners..

If it's on something I've already been working on, I often find that editing what I've already written gets me back into the flow of it so I can start on a new section. So I'll edit for the first third or half of my allotted writing time and then I'll move over to writing the new section.
Now if it's something completely new or I don't know what happens next, that's where it gets more difficult. There's nothing scarier than a blank page. A blank page is nothing - it is everything undone, it is a thought that hasn't come, it's the choked breath before you speak. You can't do anything with a blank page but write. Write something - write anything. Do a stream of consciousness. Write the lackluster scene you don't want, write the paragraphs you are absolutely sure you won't use. Even your most terrible work is better than a blank page. Once put on a page, you can use bad work, you can use stream of consciousness - far more than nothing at all. You can edit your poor work, you can rewrite it, you can see exactly what's wrong with it and where you need to go. You can get the base facts of a scene down so your mind can work on the nuances, the angle, the direction. You can rearrange, reform, recreate. When you have a blank page, you're forever waiting for the shoe to drop and for the mystical half-formed version of the scene you have in your head. When you've made even a false start you have the basis for the real start, you have started to discover what you really need to write. You have started to uncover the statue in the stone. You may leave your desk today disappointed or even disgusted with your work, but when you sit down again tomorrow, you'll probably already know how to correct those wrongs, where to begin again - you may even be itching to get back in there and write, your attempt today making you a scrappy writer tomorrow. Even in the cringe-worthy scrawling of terrible words in a hackneyed scene, you've defeated the blank page. You've turned endless possibilities wrapped in blank fear into simply something you need to work with and transform. I'd guess most writers aren't afraid of editing, reworking, rewriting, or improving. But the blank page - that's scary.(less)

“I'll say that for all the good things, all the great things, the super wow things it can do, the heart is kind of an asshole. The strongest feelings we have are never when things are stable, never when things are solid, never when we can handle things. The sharpest feelings are when things are either super good or super bad, as if the heart only ever wants to add gasoline to a fire. And the heart has all the subtlety of a freight train. It's going to hit you, and it's going to hit you hard.”
Dennis Liggio, Jabberwock Jack

“I wouldn't have trusted her to not have an ulterior motive if she asked whether I wanted milk or sugar in my coffee.”
Dennis Liggio, Cthulhu, Private Investigator

“I miss the old days, and I mean the old old days when there were some really awesome birth stories. When Hercules was still in his crib, he was attacked by two snakes sent by Hera, the unhappy wife of his father. Wee Baby Hercules strangled those two snakes by himself with nothing but his bare hands. Yes, Wee Baby Hercules was more of a badass than most of us ever reach in our entire lifespan.”
Dennis Liggio, Damned Lies

“Oh, y'know, magic stuff is full of weird vibrations!" said Dane. "Makes your palm sweat, gives you that pins and needles sensation when you hold it! Maybe something running up your arm." He paused. "Something that isn't a spider or a bug. Something running up your arm that's an invisible sensation. But not an invisible spider. Like an invisible feeling that's pins and needly. Maybe more needles than pins."
"Are you sure that's not a heart attack?" said Jaya.”
Dennis Liggio, Burning Monday

“I have the whole team just around the block! One call and they'll ride in here like cavalry! Riding on... robots! Giant robots! Well, not giant robots, like in Egan, but... but... big enough robots!”
Dennis Liggio, Burning Monday

“When you see zombies, they're typically in a horde. A big group close together, as if they were just holding hands before you saw them and they quickly let go.”
Dennis Liggio, Support Your Local Monster Hunter

“Was this the stupidest thing I had ever done? Maybe, maybe not. Top ten, at least.”
