Someone once told me, "The writing life is long." You'll have another chance to write tomorrow or next month or even next year. (Inshallah/god willing.)

If writer's block means not being able to write a particular scene or chapter or section or poem, then I deal with it by either forcing myself to do it, and then coming back and making better. Or by hopping over to another part of what I'm working on or another project all together, then coming back later. Sometimes being away from the writing and thinking about it helps you figure out how to solve the problem.(less)

This is a book about coping with the big things (heartbreak, illness) by focusing on the small stuff. The details accumulate almost imperceptibly. I found myself surprised to be crying on page 180 (near the end).

“The way she talks about family—the way everyone here does—is more foreign to Hannah than anything else. She has always had only Mama. To have dozens of people feels like a gift, a gift of love that she never expected. Because she is family, they love her. At the same time, their love is a pressure, a standard she will have to live up to.”
