While we only see what transpires in the lives of the pawns in this macabre game, there are hints that this story is only one small cog in the vast workings of a centuries-long, life-and-death struggle for power, survival, revenge and redemption in the wider universe. I enjoy subtlety in my books, so I liked that aspect, as well as the ongoing mysteries of the nature and origins of the peoples inhabiting the world.

The plot takes a bit to spin up as the characters and their seemingly-disconnected histories are introduced, but then the pattern begins taking shape. The larger theme as I perceived it, was that humanity as a whole is a barbaric, vicious species that should be relentlessly exterminated, and the protagonists learn this lesson harshly through their experiences (which are planned to shape them into the proper tools for the deity's goal). I felt that the scenes of gore and cruelty began to get repetitive towards the middle of the book (like every new scene was only predictably leading to the next fresh horror), and this had the effect of making them lose their edge and intensity. If some of the more gratuitous instances were left out, what remained would have been more potent. If you are squeamish about visceral violence, torture, and slaughter, you will want to skip this book, because much of the plot hinges on these occurrences. I stuck with it because I had faith that the author was "going somewhere" with it and that faith was justified by the end. There are some answers given in the final scenes and new questions raised. The Appendix is also a welcome bit of exposition and foreshadowing.

The writing style is good, descriptive, and well-crafted, but not awesome -- I think this author has a great deal of potential and will become better and better with experience... A sequel to this book, or at least another story set in the same universe with some overlap, would be very interesting. ...more "
