Cal Stevens grew up in Sheridan, Wyoming and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1952. Later he attended the University of Colorado where he received a BA and a Ma in Geology. After working in the oil industry in Houston, he went to USC where he received a PhD in Geology. In 1963 he joined the faculty at San Jose State University where he taught until 2006. Since then he has been writing technical reports and Western fiction.
