You stand motionless in the marsh, the water lapping over your feet with an icy embrace that sends shivers deep into your bones. This is no ordinary marsh; the water is black as pitch, swallowing any trace of light that dares to touch it. Each step you take sinks into a murky blend of human ash and bone fragments, crunching underfoot. Jaw bones, still bearing the ghastly remnants of their owners’ teeth, emerge like macabre pearls from the depths.

Above, the tree leaves rustle together, their hollow clapping creating an eerie symphony that echoes through the still air. The darkness lies thick and impenetrable behind the marsh forest, an abyss that seems to watch you with unseen eyes. Weeping willows, their drooping branches like the fingers of sorrowful ghosts, loom over the water. Their ancient limbs weave up and down, casting twisted shadows that dance on the surface.

"He stalks us all," a whisper of a woman emanates behind you, her words carried away by the cold wind. Her tone is soft, almost soothing, yet it carries a weight of unspoken secrets. You don't turn around, sensing her presence close enough that her breath tickles the back of your neck.

The marsh water, black as pitch, licks at your ankles, sending icy tendrils up your legs and through your veins. Each step you take is swallowed by the murky depths, a blend of human ash and bone fragments swirling atop the water’s surface. You wonder whose bones you’re stepping on, and how long it’s been since they died.

"Like a prowling lion, he devours anyone that lives," she continues, her voice barely above a murmur, yet clear in the stillness. The weeping willows, their branches drooping like sorrowful specters, loom over the water, casting twisted shadows that seem to reach out to you. "He cloaks himself in darkness and thrives on deceit. He preys upon the lost." The darkness behind the marsh forest seems to pulse with a malevolent life, an abyss waiting to consume anything that ventures too close.

The woman's presence feels both comforting and unsettling, as if she harbors truths too dangerous to speak aloud. "The battle between good and evil reaches its zenith," she whispers, and you can hear the edge of fear and determination in her voice. "The fate of humanity teeters on the brink of oblivion."

"This isn’t my first time, but with each visit, a shadow of apprehension tugs at the edges of my mind. The allure of beauty beckons, but beneath its veneer lies a labyrinth of uncertainty, where every assured promise carries the potential for peril. I'm consumed by a haunting question—what if my eyes were to be glued shut, ensnaring me in a darkness colder than the depths of death? What would it be like to wander in eternal darkness forever, lost in a realm where every rustle and whisper is a mystery untold, where every moment is swallowed by an endless night. And within the realm of vanity, behind closed eyes, lies the cradle of truth—a truth so profoundly chilling, it threatens to shatter the illusion of safety and plunge me into a nightmare I never anticipated."

I sit, with needle and thread, stitching slow,

A doll of voodoo, with eyes stitched tight,

A haunting smile, etched in the eerie night.

The pot upon the flames, stew boiling hot,

But mingling with the scent, a foul rot,

A stench of flesh, decaying near,

Yet still, I sit, with naught a fear.

Beside me, my loyal pup does whine,

I glance down, expecting some gruesome sign,

A dead rat, a bird in decay,

Yet instead, vomit with dried meat, brown and frayed.

I rebuke and cast it aside, with a shudder of dread,

To find in its jaws, a piece of the dead.

The puppy whines, with each chew and bite,

The stench returns, of rot and blight.

I rise, rebuke, and dispose of the vile treat,

Yet once again, it lies at my feet,

The same dried flesh, coated in gore,

My heart races, my skin prickles raw.

Outside, under moon's eerie gleam,

My faithful dog, leads me to a scene,

In the shadows, 'neath shrubs and thorns,

Lies a body, cold and forlorn.

Its skin, a pallid hue, death's embrace,

A silent witness, to some foul disgrace,

And in that moment, fear takes hold,

In the darkness, where secrets unfold.

In the haunted night, by the ocean's roar,

I'm left to wonder, what lies in store,

For in this tale of horror and woe,

Lies the echo of truths we dare not know

In the shadows of the night,

Where darkness reigns supreme,

I walk the path of solitude,

Where nightmares haunt my dreams.

Closer to the abyss I tread,

Where fallen angels fly,

Beneath the veil of starless skies,

I'll find my peace, or die.

With every step, the echoes call,

A dirge of pain and woe,

As whispers from forgotten depths,

Through darkness, I must go.

Wow, this book was truly amazing. If you love thrilling stories that revolve around politics, detectives, and crime - this one's for you. Val Penny’s lyrical and immersive writing makes it feel like a movie as you begin to read the story.

Detective Hunter Wilson returns from A HUNTER’S CHASE, and he is called to investigate a new murder that had happened. The victim, who was brutally murdered by an unknown suspect, happens to be his friend, George. Detective Hunter Wilson buckles down and tries to track down George’s killer, along with being tasked to investigate a drug-laundering case, operated by a dangerous criminal gang. Is George’s murder mystery somehow tied in with the gang, and what discoveries will he unravel?

I love how Val Penny sucks you into her story through her world building, writing, and characters. I immediately loved the main protagonist, Detective Hunter Wilson, and sympathized with all the characters quickly. Overall, this is a brilliant read that will leave you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend!
