Anne Fortier does it again in her second novel The Lost Sisterhood. Flawlessly switching between present day England to ancient Troy and beyond, Anne links the past and present together smoothly. Diana Morgan, an Oxford lecturer has been obsessed with the Amazon women of the past since she was a little girl. Growing up listening to her grandmother, believed to be insane (so much so that she’s suffered a lobotomy at one point), telling her stories of the past and ingraining them in her so deeply, Diana can’t help but follow these childhood stories into her adult life. When a seemingly random stranger approaches Diana on the street one day inexplicably inviting her on an adventure that would prove the amazons actually existed, how could she refuse?
Her decision to accept the invitation takes her on a trip straight to the past connecting of all of her wildest theories with present day reality. Her “tour guide” Nick is mysterious and all business at first, but their camaraderie unfolds as do the clues they research making her question if he is truly who he claims to be.
Uncovering clues of the past begin to prove to Diana that her grandmother was not insane and that all the stories of her childhood were true. Evolving out of their research, they learn about the love story of Myrina and Paris from ancient Troy. A story of bravery, survival, revolution and most importantly love. I couldn’t decide if my favorite characters where Diana and Nick or Myrina and Paris, although I do feel stronger toward the latter because their love for each other was so absolute.
Just like Anne’s first book Juliet, this book flows easily and effortlessly. A page turner of the best kind. Historical fiction lovers listen up! This is your new favorite read!
However, my favorite line in this book doesn’t even take place in the story. It’s written on the Author’s Note page.
Anne writes: And to the ancient Greeks, the Amazons were bestseller material. Are these remarkable women still around today? They certainly are, in every single one of us. Sometimes we don’t realize our inner Amazon until life deals us a numbing blow . . . but she is there, waiting to lend us her strength, I am sure of it.

Do you sometimes feel like you’re on the hamster wheel of life? I know I do. How many days go by that you wish you took out the time to do the things you want to do but by the time you could actually do them its already bedtime? I feel like this every night lately. Poignant, refreshing, exciting, thrilling, with just the right amount of bravery and romance to keep you at the edge of your seat. The Nightingale played out in my head like a movie and kept me thinking of the characters long after I finished the book. A must read for any book lover!
