I grew up in Lincolnshire and have a degree and PhD in Biochemistry. Writing fiction in my spare time, I have had short stories published in literary magazines and was runner up in the Guildford Book Festival short story competition in 2010. I have also self-published Tales of Golmeira, a YA fantasy series with a lesbian protagonist, receiving two Red Ribbons from the Wishing Shelf Awards. In 2017, redundancy spurred me to focus on creative writing, resulting in The Secret of Matterdale Hall, a sapphic romance/mystery set in the Victorian era, published by Bellows Press.

I live in Cheshire, UK, with my wife and two dogs.

Thank you for giving Matterdale Hall a chance. I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I don't currently have any plans to follow Marion to London. It's an interesting idea, but she is a bit of a cold fish (at least on the surface), so I don't know if readers would engage with her story. You are right to point out that she's ripe for some personal growth though.(less)

Examples are when I feel my work in progress is not where it should be, or I spot a deep seated problem - my plot is forcing my character to do things they really wouldn't or some dialogue that I've sweated over just isn't working. Generally, I leave the writing for a few days, to trust to my subconscious to solve the problem. It usually does. Editing is always easier than creating. Reading other books also helps, particularly those of high quality authors. I have a theory that you imbibe writing skills - the more good books you read, the better your own writing will become.(less)

How writers use ambiguity to create mood and depth

In the Henry James’ gothic masterpiece,The Turn of the Screw, the reader is never quite sure if the protagonist, a governess in charge of two young children, is delusional and a danger to those around her, or whether she is being harassed by occult forces of evil. This ambiguity is key to creating tension throughout the novel, one which is never completely dispelled. The chilling Laura Purcell Col Read more of this blog post »

"Listened on audiobook. This novel is narrated from the POV of a robot, so how good can it be? Rest assured, Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go still reign supreme, but Ishiguro is a masterful storyteller and still managed to break my heart open. " Read more of this review »
