Autism

After 35 years of teaching, mostly special education, I have seen education strategies come and go. I would like to hear from parents and teachers. What strategies are the most effective for you? I had the most success by entering the child's world first. I never forced a child to sit in a seat or join the class- though I strongly encouraged and rewarded them. I sat on the floor playing with blocks or stuffed animals with the child. When I gained their trust and found an interest, I used that interest to pull them into education. I taught a girl who loved McDonald's. I put golden arches on her chair. She gladly sat in her 'chair M.' That was third grade. She is now in college. My first book 'Never Push and Never Pull'Never Push and Never Pull shows some strategies that were successful in my class.
