First, I really don't consider myself as an authority on "writing a book" and I surprised myself when I discovered my muse. So, I can only say what worked for me. My first book, "Robots Like Blue" was the result of years of fascination with the philosophical consideration of the nature of consciousness.

I would argue and debate online in various forums. I was compelled to debate. Then I realised that I was covering the same ground over and over. I decided to write a book. Once started he power of the compulsion truly surprised me!

I never knew that it would be good, but early feedback encouraged me.

My advice, for what it is worth is:

1. Find your muse!
2. Write what you feel compelled to write. In the order that you feel compelled to write it.
3. Stitch it together.
4. Draft and redraft. Shred.
5. Publish when you're happy.

If you are disciplined you can make a routine to write a number of words per day/week. Unfortunately, I have trouble disciplining myself in this regard.

Sorry, but I think there are many better authors to answer this questions.(less)

George R.R. Martin
“I think there are two types of writers, the architects and the gardeners. The architects plan everything ahead of time, like an architect building a house. They know how many rooms are going to be in the house, what kind of roof they're going to have, where the wires are going to run, what kind of plumbing there's going to be. They have the whole thing designed and blueprinted out before they even nail the first board up. The gardeners dig a hole, drop in a seed and water it. They kind of know what seed it is, they know if planted a fantasy seed or mystery seed or whatever. But as the plant comes up and they water it, they don't know how many branches it's going to have, they find out as it grows. And I'm much more a gardener than an architect.”
George R.R. Martin

J.R.R. Tolkien
“Now it is a strange thing, but things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpitating, and even gruesome, may make a good tale, and take a deal of telling anyway.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again

Zora Neale Hurston
“Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place.”
Zora Neale Hurston

“He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much;
Who has enjoyed the trust of pure women, the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children;
Who has filled his niche and accomplished his task;
Who has never lacked appreciation of Earth's beauty or failed to express it;
Who has left the world better than he found it,
Whether an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul;
Who has always looked for the best in others and given them the best he had;
Whose life was an inspiration;
Whose memory a benediction.”
Bessie Anderson Stanley, More Heart Throbs Volume Two in Prose and Verse Dear to the American People And by them contributed as a Supplement to the original $10,000 Prize Book HEART THROBS

Susan Sontag
“I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list.”
