Hank Willenbrink is a scholar/artist. His play The Boat in the Tiger Suit premiered at The Brick Theater (NYC) in August 2013 after being read at the quiet New Works Festival in Seattle. It was published by Original Works Publishing in October 2014. His play 18 won the Corwin Award for Best Short Play from the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. He has also won the Corwin Award for Antarctica. The Earthquake Predictor Rides the Bus took audiences on a faux historical tour of Santa Barbara, on a bus. Crater took place on a giant rock and later at the University of California Institute for Research in the Arts at the Makrolab, a futuristic domicile and research station. A Single Event was showcased at Performance Highways in Santa Monica. Hank wrote and directed MIRANDA BRANSON BRANSON MIRANDA for the Necessary Theater in Louisville, KY. It Came from Indiana! was produced by Walden Theatre in Louisville, KY in 2009. About the Cabin was seen at the Nuyorican Poet’s Café (NYC). A one-woman show, Universal Applicant, premiered as a part of the Jason Miller Playwrights’ Project Dyonisia 2012. woodman series, a short play about the neuroscience of perception and the photographer Francesca Woodman, will be read as a part of the Generous Company’s GUMBO 2013. Hank also wrote the short documentary about surfing entitled The Wave, directed by Judy Bauerlein and Andrea Polli. He has two monologues published in Monologues for Men by Men and More Monologues for Men by Men and three monologues published in The Best Men's Stage Monologues of 2014 (Smith & Kraus).

As a scholar, Hank's work focuses on the intersection of performatives and performance through his interrogation of Hell Houses, which he did the first full-length analysis of for his Ph.D. His essay on Hell House "The Act of Being Saved: Hell House and the Salvific Performative" appeared in Theatre Journal (66.1). In Contemporary Theatre Review, Hank published an article on Naomi Iizuka's At the Vanishing Point unpacking how the play weaves together physical and metaphysical landscapes to evince an understanding of Butchertown, a historic post-industrial neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky, through the perspective of the influential experimental photographer Ralph Eugene Meatyard, and arguing that Iizuka provides a nuanced way to interact with the industrial legacies of developed nations. His article for Theatre Forum analyzes how Andrea Thome's play Pinkolandia is a new type of "testimonio," a narrative genre which transmits stories of struggles of the oppressed. Transnational and intergenerational, Thome's play is aimed at preserving the memories of a family’s experiences after the Chilean coup of 1973. Hank also co-edited a volume of Spanish- and Portuguese-language writers in English translation entitled Palabras: Dispatches from the Festival de la Palabra.

Forthcoming, Hank has an chapter analyzing the music of Girls in the critical anthology HBO’s Girls: The Awkward Politics of Race, Sex, Class, Gender and Privilege (Lexington Books) and a book review for John Fletcher's Preaching to Convert" (Theatre Journal).

Hank teaches and is Director of the Theatre Program at the University of Scranton and co-founded the music blog We Listen for You. He holds degrees from the University of Tulsa and University of California, Santa Barbara. ...more
