I'm an engineer (in the same way BS Johnson is an architect), a roboticist (who would fit in well at the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation), a public policy wonk, and an SF/fantasy author (which is probably why you're here). My mom started taking me to publishing conventions at the age of 7, and I've been chewing my way towards getting into the business ever since. I've picked up an inordinate number of skills that look good on paper along the way, so into the books they go, sans the panoply of in-words, acronyms and initialisms that plague engineering today. We will not be attempting TQM on the VSM as we go to the gemba and find out where our Herbies live.

I aspire to one day being semi-permanently proximal to a creature of the feline persuasi

I think part of it is that I have a pretty limited time to write because of my job, so the ideas are always flowing faster than I can find time to write them down.

That said, I often struggle with phrasing once it's on the page. It can sound incredible in my mind or when I say it, but then it seems clumsy in print and I need to rephrase. One of the things that helps me most with that is recording the audiobook myself. I have to read every word and that really helps me feel out both what looks good and sounds good.(less)

Response to NHTSA Request for Comment on AV Regulation

I know it’s been awhile since I last posted. I’ve been a bit busy with moving, a new job, and getting my second novel edited! When I saw this request for comment, however, I knew I needed to respond. Framework for Automated Driving System Safety, though because I got busy with the holidays, I missed the comments opening and closing! Luckily, they did a 60 day extension, which is where my comment w

More of Paul's books…
“The need for challenge and exploration arises mostly out of the blockage of fulfillment of lower level needs, giving rise to a pervading restlessness. Out of this restlessness there arises much pathology as searchers collide with established structuring and functioning of the environment. Out of this restlessness there also arises a small cadre of creative deviants whose insights and inventions have provided the leverage which has enabled man to increase his standard of living and his compassionate concern for his fellows. Our success in being human has so far derived from our honoring deviance more than tradition. Template changing has always gained a slight, though often tenuous, lead over template obeying. Now we must search diligently for those creative deviants from whom alone will come the conceptualizations of an evolutionary designing process which can assure us an open ended future -- toward whose realization we can all participate.”
