I was brought up and educated in St. Catharines, Ontario, where I wrote a poem called MacBeth, which won first prize poem in the school review and hooked me on writing. An English teacher told me I should be a poet, but I opted not to take the poverty route and went into Engineering at Royal Military College. After a couple of months there, I wondered if poetry might have been better. It was hard.
I received a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Toronto and went into the RCAF, working as an aeronautical engineering officer. I retired as a Major and joined Spar Aerospace for a short while, until they fired me. I then joined the Coast Guard as an executive, managing Marine Navigational Services on the Great Lakes

To overcome this, I minimize the text, open my Bridge or Chess program and play for a while. If this doesn't work, I leave the room and try to get my wife to join me for a cup of coffee.
The second is more serious and happens when I just can't think of where the plot should go to. The cure, go to a movie or the beach, read a book or just stop trying for a while until inspiration returns.(less)
