John Harper is a science fiction novelist from Wellington New Zealand and the author of the upcoming Elite:Dangerous novel 'Elite:And Here The Wheel', due for publication early 2014 by Fantastic Books Publishing.

John’s writing career began in his first year of school when he stood before the school assembly and read out his ‘novelisation’ of the movie Short Circuit, a picture book of six pages. He spent the rest of his school years writing endless pieces of original and fan fiction, most of the action revolving around his first original hero 'Jack Hamilton', Awesome Ass Kicking Extroadinaire and Pontiac driver.

John likes spending time with his two children, and he follows cricket and the V8 Supercars religiously. He is a passionate writer a

Engineering the Draft

It’s been about five months since I completed the first draft of ‘The Bezerker’, and I haven’t started the next edit yet.

But I haven’t been idle. I’ve been working on the novel. Just not in writing new words or editing. What I’ve been doing instead is something far more important, and also, quite interesting:

Stephen King
“There is a muse, but he’s not going to come fluttering down into your writing room and scatter creative fairy-dust all over your typewriter or computer. He lives in the ground. He’s a basement kind of guy. You have to descend to his level, and once you get down there you have to furnish an apartment for him to live in. You have to do all the grunt labor, in other words, while the muse sits and smokes cigars and admires his bowling trophies and pretends to ignore you. Do you think it’s fair? I think it’s fair. He may not be much to look at, that muse-guy, and he may not be much of a conversationalist, but he’s got inspiration. It’s right that you should do all the work and burn all the mid-night oil, because the guy with the cigar and the little wings has got a bag of magic. There’s stuff in there that can change your life. Believe me, I know.”
