When I was ten years old, I wrote my first mystery. It was twenty pages long, written in cursive (I don’t think they teach that in schools anymore) and featured a teenage sleuth named Mandy London. To me, the name evoked dark glasses, double-breasted trench coats, and red lipstick. Eat your heart out, Nancy Drew.

Over time, Mandy London faded into the shadows and Grace Howard came forward. Mandy's still in there somewhere, though, her fedora pulled low. Because both women are a part of me, along with every hero and villain I've ever written. Even the bad ones.

That's the way it is when you're a writer. You don't start with nothing and create something. You start with something inside you and you put it on the page for people to see.
