O’ GOD! TEACH ME TO TELL A LIE

O’ God!
Teach me to tell a lie,
For, truth as they teach to tell, is for children;
The grown up have many versions of it,
Each armed with arguments, sharp ‘n shining.

O’ Christ!
Teach me to tell a lie,
For, there’re half truths, ‘n truths of many shades;
And there’re truth’s looks-alike,
Adorned by sweet comeliness.

O’ Lord!
Teach me to tell a lie,
For, there’s another truth:
Both true ‘n false at the same time;
And yet another, the listener eager to listen.

O’ Almighty!
Teach me to tell a lie,
For, a lie’s another shade of truth;
A lie, but the truth of the moment,
A lie harmless ‘n honest.

Story - Sorry, Sara !

She is young and beautiful, as any beauty could be. Slim of body, her eyes are golden-brown. For those who love this combination of colours in a female’s eye, it was maddening.

If not for that, why did he show his preference for Sara? It could as well have been the lustre of her bright skin and long, supple legs, which he liked so much in her.

One of her guardians spoke to me in whispers that her beauty apart, he was in real love with Sara for her tamed behaviour. Westerners may not consider ‘tamed behaviour’ as an appreciable quality in a woman, though. For, they value personal liberty much above many other qualities in an individual. But, for him, an Indian as he is, he was appreciative of this discipline in Sara. He was more than willing to take risks for this particular feature in her otherwise attractive personality. He, like all other males, knew that Sara too could be catty, if the situation so demanded. But, that would not deter a true lover from loving his valentine. Love is a take-it-or-leave-it package, warts and all.

And Sara was sad too. Sadness tames. Her spirits were low. For, she was left to herself, without friends for company. Especially when she was young and vivacious, she had a natural right to mingle. But, her guardians would not permit that. Modern man, armed with the all-encompassing knowledge of science, would not allow unverified union, marriage. The traditional guardian would let the groom go through a series of tests before settling for him. Even the modern guardians prefer a different set of tests, including the blood test, before accepting a proposal for their well-guarded female ward. They call it compatibility test.

Our civilized society has set its own laws for everything. The values of natural law have been ignored. That there is an aspect of time for everything in nature is forgotten. Our over-
indulgence in our wards has given us a sense of unbridled power to fiddle with the natural process.

But a mad lover is willing to kill, to be killed too.

Sara, my dear girl! Your valentine has offered his captivity for you. He is held in tight leash in your neighbourhood. But his union with you is in the hands of so many people. One above the other. Each fighting with the other for the right to decide upon your mate. And your
valentine’s fate too.

They are debating whether he would be the right candidate for you.

If yes, when?

Sara, baby! Do you know, since when the big cat offered himself for captivity from the unfettered wild into the NandanKanan Zoo for your sake? Yes, just for you.

His mad love for you bought him his captivity precisely on 30 April 2013.

You two have missed this Valentine’s Day too, as I write it now.

My sympathies, prayers for you two wild, but caged, valentines.

Sorry, Sara!
