My Hero, Mitch
Yesterday I got inspired by a kid who I've never met, Mitch. He's something real special, and his eyes have that sparkle that remind me of the north star, the bravest of all stars. This kid is my new idol, a poster-boy that has encouraged me to be a better me, to laugh more and smile longer and be more human. I have been lucky enough to have contact with a fair few of my idols, but Mitch is the only one who hasn't disappointed my vision of them. Please, show him some support, show him some love...
Dear Mitchell,
You won't have heard of me, but even though I live on the farthest coasts of England, I've heard all about you. I heard about you being an unbelievably strong kid with a unbreakable smile, and I want to thank you for inspiring me.
You have that purity in your eyes that disarms people. Your eyes have that sparkle that reminds me of the north star, which is the first star to creep into the night sky. It's the bravest star of them all, because despite how scared he is of the darkness he wants to make sure the night is a safe place before letting the other stars know its okay for them to come out and dance and sing and shine. You are that north star.
I have to admit something that is going to be a little bit embarrassing for me, but when I was your age I looked up to those people that symbolised strength, soldiers and warriors and hunters and superheroes, they were my role models and idols. I wanted to be just like them, as strong and courageous as them.
But this has all changed.
I now have a new role model that want to be like, someone stronger than the Hulk and braver than Captain America, and that someone is you, Mitchell. I want to be as strong as you, kid. I want to be as brave and courageous you, and I want to be able smile like you do despite the adversities. I want to wear a huge cheshire cat smile that hangs from ear to ear just like you do, because it takes true grit to hold your head high when the chips are down. It takes heroism like no other to laugh and smile when all around is turmoil. It takes a real backbone to keep grinning and fighting despite the sometimes sombre eyes of those around you. To carry on the fight with a chipper cheekiness and sparkle in your eyes takes courage beyond that of a soldier or a lion or a superhero.
And that is the bravery you have.
You character and your strength have inspired me more than anyone else I know, Mitchell, as have your parents. Your family is beautiful. You guys epitomise what it is to stand together as a unit, as a family, to love together and laugh together and enjoy each other to the fullest, and that is a rare, rare thing, trust me.
Now when I heard of your heroics, I was told that a miracle was needed, but I see it a little differently. To me, you are the miracle. Your tooth and nail desire to not give in has inspired me to be a better person, to be stronger and happier and more human. But its not just me you've had an effect on, because you have inspired so many people, Kid. You've shone like a shooting star and provided that inspiration to those who need that spark of something beautiful and pure to help them with their own battles. You have that spark of something magic that makes people smile and laugh and sing, and that is a true gift.
You are a miracle to so many people, Mitchell, most of all me, and I wanted to thank you for showing such courage because you have inspired me.
Onward, ever onward.
My warmest regards,
William
