Mary T. Wilkinson is the second oldest of thirteen children. She loved reading and telling stories to her siblings. She decided to be a teacher and graduated from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Elementary Education. Mary met her husband, Paul, there. They married and raised three children; Ben, Bob, and Maria. Mary taught almost 30 years in public school. She became an Indiana Writing Project Fellow at Ball State University. There she put the beginnings of her first novel, Call Me Lizzy, on paper. Encouraged by her IWP fellows and her family, she decided to pursue a career in writing. Call Me Lizzy is an inspiring example of her work.

One set took her to the American Legion and let her play bingo with them. The other set were very religious and took her to church 3 days a week. I asked her if she minded me taking this little bit of information and make a book around this idea. She agreed and ending up being a great friend as I got to know her better. Her life is nothing like Lizzy's except for the little bit she told me years ago. I dedicated the book to her and my husband. (less)

So I keep a notebook by my bed and write down all of the ideas that are flowing through my brain. Then I can sleep, knowing I will not forget those ideas the next day. When I get stuck in my writing, I can pull out that notebook and it usually gets me going again.(less)

When Life Doesn't Seem Fair

In 2018, my 36 year old son died suddenly at his work desk. The autopsy said he had an enlarged heart that quit beating. At that moment, my son went to heaven but his wife and three children were left here on earth to grieve his passing. My husband and I and the rest of our family were doing the same. We went through so much sorrow that I thought my own heart would burst. I certainly didn't want t Read more of this blog post »

“There are far too many people for us to think about each of them during our short stay on earth—like the thousands of books in a library we haven’t time to read in an afternoon. But this is no excuse to cease browsing. For every now and then, we find that one book that reaches us deep inside and introduces us to ourselves. And, in someone else’s story, we come to understand our own.”

“You will always miss her. There will be days - even years from now - when the missing will be so sharp it will take your breath away. But there will be good days, too, months and years of them. In one way or another you'll be searching for her all your life.”
