Born in the Isle of Man, my family moved to England when I was 2 and I grew up in a village near Banbury in Oxfordshire. My father was an actor, and my mother an artist.

I wanted to write from a very young age. I loved magical/mystical stories, such as those written by C.S Lewis and Alan Garner. When I was 12 we moved to London where I stayed for the next 20 years, and upon leaving decided to become an actor like my Dad - but the continual struggle to find work I found too frustrating and eventually gave it up and spent several years in an assortment of jobs including secretarial work and teaching. All through these years I have written in my spare time.

I am now self employed as a professional genealogist - and the books I am writing are eit

The novel follows the main character through the travelling theatre companies of the provinces and on to the London theatres of the Victorian period. While most Victorian women lived life under various restrictions, she is able to experience the freedom that came with being an actress at that time - but also the disadvantages - and there are many lessons to be learned.

I started this one many years ago - and it got put on a back burner while I was doing other things. It was inspired by some research I did for my Open University degree when I did a project on Victorian local entertainment. I found a bundle of letters from a travelling theatre company which gave a great insight into the lives of touring actors. I have also used some of the people who wrote those letters as characters in my novel. I am also having fun introducing some real people into the novel, such as Charles Dickens, Charles Macready, and some of the theatre managers of the time.

It's slow progress as I have so many other commitments - so I just keep plugging away and hope to finish it within a year or two.(less)

So, I sat down and asked myself the question, what do I want to write?

I knew I wanted to write a story where a house would be an important part of the story, where there would be links with the past and some kind of family history theme. One of my favourite things about writing and also my professional career as a genealogist, is making links between past and present - and that's what I wanted to do with this novel. I also wanted something in it that would be out of the ordinary - something rather mysterious and strange. My first idea for Will's character was that he would be time traveller - almost a Dr. Who kind of character, but he evolved into someone much more human.

I also love the idea of writing scenes from the past - I really enjoyed writing the historical chapters, and to an extent, it was an exercise in following women's history of the past 200 years, but in reverse.(less)
