My name is Brett Wallach, and I'm a father of two daughters from the Philadelphia area. The protagonist in my Phil Allman, P.I. series of mysteries is a misanthropic, sentimental, bitter, funny, romantic, lustful, tough, sometimes amoral, slightly (?) insane divorced father of two daughters from Philadelphia. Any resemblance to myself is highly coincidental. I've tried to create a character who often says and does the wrong things, after reading so many books in this genre where the main character, despite quirks, is usually unrealistically virtuous. Think Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver, only funnier. My favorite authors are John Steinbeck, Graham Greene, Raymond Chandler, Elmore Leonard, Dennis Lehane, and many others. Young Blood, Lolita controversy

Lolita was one of the most revered and popular novels of the twentieth century. Yet it's about a man who sexually lusts after preteen girls in general, and "Lolita" in particular. My new novel, Young Blood, the third in the Phil Allman P.I. series, covers somewhat similar ground, but the protagonist simply initiates a flirtatious online chat with her. As a detective, he ends up having to find her Read more of this blog post »

Great fun. But the denouncement is pathetic, it ruins the book.

Levy plays it down the middle. Not overly fawning or critical. Some odd takes on several movies docked him a star.

Way too much science and math for me, and the droning inner monologue gets old fast. But the main character is so smart-assy likable that it was an overall pleasant read. But no suspense really...we already know the ending.

The denouncement ruins what was a good mob novel. One of the dumbest endings ever. It’s the first of a trilogy so you can figure it out.

We all like Tom. Or at least I do. He’s a really good actor. But. He’s not a good novelist. Like Michael Jordan couldn’t play baseball. It’s a different skill set. And by accepting Tom, Knopf closed out a spot for a more gifted novelist. Like myself ...more
