Faust’s Gold Offers Childhelp a Golden Opportunity
The latest edition of Dr. Steven Ungerleider’s groundbreaking book Faust’s Gold: Inside the German Doping Machine adds critical updates to the pervasive reality of performance-enhancing drug abuse in youth athletics. Proceeds of the first 5,000 copies sold directly benefit the children of Childhelp.
Scottsdale, AZ-October 17, 2013 At what price gold? A smiling child holds a gleaming medal as anabolic steroids course through her system. For a moment she is a star, a creation of an East German “doping machine” responsible for record-breaking athletes. When cheers on the athletics field fade, this chemically-altered child will be left with years of health dangers, psychological damage and possible birth defects in her children.
Foundation for Global Sports Development leader, Olympic Consultant and sports psychologist, Dr. Steven Ungerleider, has updated his seminal work on the subject of performance-enhancing drugs in professional athletics with the new edition of Faust’s Gold: Inside the German Doping Machine.
The New Yorker Magazine writer Malcolm Gladwell describes a poignant moment in the first edition, “In a new book about the East German sports establishment, 'Faust's Gold', Ungerleider recounts the moment in 1998 when a former GDR athlete testified in Berlin at the trial of her former coaches and doctors. She pointed at the two defendants and shouted, 'They destroyed my body and my mind!'"
From the latest research to his consulting work with Lance Armstrong’s team, Dr. Ungerleider not only uses his book to unveil modern drug abuse in the sports arena, he takes active steps to change the system.
The Foundation for Global Sports Development has underwritten Childhelp Blow the Whistle on Child Abuse with America’s largest and longest-running nonprofit advocating for abused and neglected children. This prevention education program directly targets youth sports to create safer, more empowered young athletes. The first 5,000 copies of Faust’s Gold sold will support this national initiative.
Dr. Ungerleider spoke of his longtime association with Nobel Peace Prize nominees and Childhelp Co-Founders, Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson, “Drugging children is child abuse. Faust’s Gold is about unethical abusive coaches and sports organizations making a deal with the devil for a little hunk of gold but my mission is to make a deal with a couple of angels at Childhelp so that we can work together to end these barbaric practices and keep our kids safe, drug free and reaching their ultimate potentials.”
