On July 4, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Deborah McTiernan was born into a family of avid readers. At the age of 4, she spent hours in her grandmother’s attic typing on the portable, baby-blue Smith-Corona typewriter she’d discovered in an old steamer trunk. While pretending to write exciting stories of magical heroes and heroines, the keys of that typewriter ignited her imagination.

Her family was transferred from the East Coast to the Midwest. They eventually left the city and settled in the small rural community of Orion, Illinois (thinly disguised as Archer’s Bow, Illinois in her story, “Lilly Noble & Actual Magic”). It was while living in Orion, Deborah became a life long fan of fairy tales, myth, and magic. Summers off from school ga

Start by reading everything you can get your hands on. I love to read and learn a great deal every day by studying the work of other authors.

Then, get yourself into the habit of writing for at least fifteen minutes a day. Don't censor yourself, just get the words on the page. Keep in mind, no matter what you write, nothing is ever wasted, and then watch those pages add up.

If you only write a single page every day or even every other day, by the end of one year you will have accumulated anywhere from 183 to 365 pages. That is one or two books! (less)

So happy to hear you love my cover art, I appreciate that. Thank you, also for your concern about our hurricane. No damage from Nicole here where I live, other than broken tree limbs and overturned patio furniture. We consider ourselves very lucky.

Beauty and the Beast

Recently I've been reading for inspiration and ideas for how to twist my current novel-in-progress, LILLY NOBLE & THE MOONLIGHT MURDERS. For ideas with the love story part, I just finished reading Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve's original story of The Beauty and the Beast, written in 1740, and translated by J.R. Planché.

I loved this story! Through the years, and the many retellings of Bea Read more of this blog post »

“One young light will rise from despair to lead us out of the spell of darkness.”
“What spell of darkness? There is no darkness!” he insisted. “It isn’t here yet, but it’s coming. Can’t you feel it?”

“Lilly closed her fist over the pendant to block out the sound. She wanted to toss the thing into the sea, but it had belonged to her mother, and her father said its luck would keep her safe while she was far away from home. Lilly decided she could use all the luck she could get, even if it came in the form of a creepy locket.”

“The deceased paid close attention to the manners of the living. If the living were polite and respectful, the spirits participated in the séance; if the living behaved badly, the dead didn’t bother showing up.”

Lilly Noble & the Phantom Rush

Deborah McTiernan Hello Bookworms,

Next month I'll be posting a Kindle Free Giveaway for book number 2 in my Lilly Noble series, Lilly Noble & the Phantom Rush!

Story Title Definition:
Phantom Rush: Spirit stampede. Mass exodus of ghosts from a graveyard or favorite haunt to elude evil.

Here's an excerpt from Lilly Noble & the Phantom Rush!

PROLOGUE
RAVEN’S LANDING, MAINE
The heavy bell of the nearby church tower struck.
Three, four, five...
Headmaster Morlock Mondragon rolled over on the sofa
and stared hard at the fire flaring in the hearth. Flaring? “What time is it?”
Confused, he listened for the hour.
Six, seven...
It was way past eleven when he went to sleep.
Eight...
He listened for sounds of kids scurrying in the hall between
the tolls. And then he remembered.
Nine...
Apart from the handful of students and the few teachers assigned to supervise them, Bonaventure’s Academy of Magic on Raven’s Landing was practically a ghost town.
Ten...
Why was his office so dark?
Wood in the fireplace crackled, shooting up sparks. To his
great astonishment, the church bell continued to toll.
Eleven...
“No, no that can’t be right.”
The pad of paper and raven-quill pen resting on his lap slid
to the floor.
Twelve.
The tolling stopped.
The night went quiet and still.
Groggily, he realized he’d been asleep only a handful of
minutes. With an exasperated sigh, he reached down to retrieve pad and pen from the floor. He was surprised to see his breath smoke.
“What the...?” His breath smoked again.
Morlock groped for the pad, fumbled the pen, and without bothering to look, placed both on the small end table behind his head.
Flexing his stiff, tingling fingers he realized his hands were numb. His palms on his cheeks felt like icicles.
For no logical reasons he could fathom, his dungeon office seemed oddly unfamiliar and extremely cold.
He endeavored to piece together the chill in the room despite the blazing fire. But the darkness was so complete he could scarcely distinguish his surroundings.
This must be a dream.
Of course, it was the only logical explanation.
The fire always kept his office comfortable.
Another foggy breath escaped his lips.
The air inside his office thickened with scattered gloom
and a biting chill. The cobbled masonry of the walls trembled. Stone dust rained down from the ceiling. Pulverized mortar puffed out from between the rocks forming the dungeon cell.
Morlock knew right then this was no dream.
Lifting his gaze, he watched a reflection undulate across the glass doors of the bookcase.
The draped and hooded phantom floated like mist along the floor in his direction. A thin layer of ice unfurled in the spirit’s wake. Frosting the furnishings, the crystal coating glittered in the firelight.
Morlock gathered his wits as best he could before he blurted, “I did exactly as you instructed.” Fog poured from between his words.
The phantom’s empty hood folded from side to side as if shaking its invisible head, no.
“Yes! Yes, I did,” Morlock insisted as firmly as he dared.
Inside the hood, the darkness remained a black and bottomless void.
“But the ancient prophecy, it tells of the girl who remembered! She can’t possibly be the one we’ve been waiting for!” Morlock knew it was pointless to argue. His opponent in this discussion was dead, after all.
Morlock was no stranger to ghostly encounters, but this particular spirit was unknown to him. Therefore, its behavior remained strange and unpredictable.
The phantom lifted a hollow sleeve and pointed at the pad and pen on the end table behind him. The hood gave a single nod.
In that moment, the man’s entire belief system was instantly shattered. For it was on that tablet of paper, Morlock had written a single name:
LILLY NOBLE
Casting his eyes around the room, Morlock reassured himself. The phantom had brought along none of his specter army.
“I’m afraid,” but Morlock was terrified actually. “There is nothing more I can do for you at the moment,” he said, exhaling a frustrated breath of smoke.
It was then that Morlock felt a heavy change in the air, and of one thing he was absolutely certain.
A war was coming.

Stay tuned my bookworm friends!

Deborah McTiernan Lilly Noble & the Moonlight Murders

Happy New Year Goodreads Book Lovers,

Hope everyone enjoyed wonderful holidays and rang in 2023 in style. My style was ringing in the New Year with a good book!

Currently reading Lisa Jackson's THE THIRD GRAVE pub. July 2021. Haven't figured out who the murderer is yet, as her red herrings are leading me in three differnt directions. Enjoying the story and Lisa's storytelling style very much. Also, I'm using this book as research, for the book I am currently writing, book #4 in my Lilly Noble series, LILLY NOBLE & THE MOONLIGHT MURDERS.

Just finished posting the cover for this book. I'd love to get your opinions on this cover.

Wherever life takes you, always leave room for magic!
