Arends suffered of depressions for most of his life, about which he wrote in Keefman (1972) one of the most impressive testimonies. When he was not staying in psychiatric hospitals, Arends worked alternately as a writer, a copywriter for advertising agencies and as a servant for older women.

“en sommige dingen wist zij niet, die wilde ze alleen maar zo.”
Jan Arends, Ik had een strohoed en een wandelstok: Verhalen (BB literair)

“Ik
schrijf gedichten
als dunne bomen.

Wie
kan zo mager
praten met de taal
als ik?

Misschien is mijn vader
gierig geweest
met het zaad.

Ik heb
hem nooit
gekend,
die man.

Ik heb
nooit
een echt woord gehoord
of het deed pijn.

Om pijn
te schrijven
heb je
weinig woorden
nodig.”
Jan Arends, Vrijgezel op kamers. Verzameld werk

“Een
kleine barst
wordt
een scheur

Een scheur
wordt
een kloof.

En zo
staat de mens
alleen”
Jan Arends, Nagelaten gedichten
