Through early exposure to the work of artists like Alfred Hitchcock, George Romero, and Rod Serling; Mike Hunchback became enchanted by art's dark side at a very young age. The slew of H.P. Lovecraft- inspired '80s horror films that began with Re-Animator led him to pick up a then current collection of the author's work. "I've always been kind of stand-offish about a lot of the 'trash' that I like. To me, the comics, horror films, cartoons and writing that I like aren't any less legitimate than any other widely-appreciated work. I'm on a mission of sorts, with the goal of legitimizing "Horror Culture". From Poe to Mike Diana, there's a strain that connects the dark side of things, and to me, this material isn't 'trash', it's not a joke. It's the kind of art that I really feel like saved my life. I know there are other people out there like me being told they should feel bad for being into this stuff, and at a young age that can really affect people, turn them off from going outside the box. Small-mindedness and condescension are way more harmful than Horror."

As for Pulp Macabre ... Typically obsessive, Mike Hunchback came to know of Weird Tales magazine from researching Lovecraft, and came to see Coye's work on the cover of Stuart David Schiff's fanzine Whispers. After getting Whispers' Coye tribute issue he was hooked forever.

Starting when Coye information and appreciation was scant online, Mike Hunchback began a long series of blog posts on Coye's artwork as well as other Pulp related art including lesser-known illustrators like Matt Fox, Milton Luros, and Boris Dolgov. After several years he began corresponding with publishers of Coye's work and even Lee Brown Coye's son and grandson. ...more
