A Strange Affinity by Rebecca Rook - Fantasy, Young Adult

A Strange Affinity
by Rebecca Rook
Publication date: March 26th 2024
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
A Strange Affinity is a hypnotizing cross between the television show Deadwood and Tamora Pierce’s renowned Tortall Universe. This young adult fantasy novel, set in an alternate nineteenth century American Wild West, will appeal to fans of Vengeance Road and Retribution Rails by Erin Bowman, Revenge and the Wild by Michelle Modesto, and Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey.
In the Wild West, magic is real.
When two strangers arrive in her small town, Gloriana Rue learns that she has the magical ability, or Affinity, to manipulate metal. She also learns that her mother was a renowned magical scholar but had abandoned the world of Affinities. Glory is desperate to know why her mother hid her past, and so agrees to attend an academy for magicians in the hopes of finding answers.
Glory is soon immersed in magic and mystery when she stumbles upon a disturbing discovery: A killer is hunting magicians throughout the American West – and he’s getting closer. Only by seeking out her mother’s secrets can she stop him and save her newfound family.
EXCERPT:Glory adored her new magician’s studio.
The space was outfitted as a smith’s shop, furnished with a long workbench, a wall hung with gently worn but serviceable tools, and a small, portable blacksmith’s forge. She was awkward with many of the tools at first but grew better and more proficient by the day. Glory worked long into the evenings, well past the end of her classes. She came to love the feeling of being surrounded by scraps of different metals: gold, silver, copper, and iron. It felt like being surrounded by friends, or family. It was hard for Glory to describe but she felt that each metal had a different personality.
Glory thrived under Jacinda’s tutelage. She went on to master a series of ever-challenging tasks she had set before her: Molding new shapes, melding metals together, and extracting the elements. Soon each new task seemed easier than the last.
In a recent conversation, Jacinda had warned Glory these new skills were among the easiest for a magician. True transformation of physical properties was much harder, and in some cases, impossible without several years of further study.
“Lead to gold?” Glory had asked, skepticism and humor in her voice. She remembered reading such silly tales among her father’s library.
Jacinda had chuckled. “Not quite. You’re bound by the chemical properties of the source material. But with study and practice, who knows what’s possible? The magical properties of metal are vastly understudied and largely composed of myths and legends about alchemy. And because there are so few metal magicians, we still don’t know what they — you — are capable of.”Author Bio:

Gob the Gnome The Gnome and the Seedlings - Childrens Book
Illustrated by: Angel Neha
Children's Book
Date Published: February 27, 2024
Publisher: Mindstir Media
This short story is about a mother wanting balance for her children. She wants her children to spend more time outdoor exercising, running and having fun. One weekend mom encouraged her children to stop playing video games and streaming movies while sitting on the couch and spend some time in the local National Park. While at the park the children, Nathan and his sister, met a mythical and magical Gnome, named Gob. Gob the Gnome explained to the children what his role is at the National Park, and how to plant seeds to grow trees.
I chose to add a Gnome as one of the main characters because since the 1400s, folklore has described Gnomes as guards of treasure and the protector of earth. Gnomes represents stability, growth and Good Luck. My six children books all revolve around a Gnome, the protector of a local forest who became friends with Nathan and Iris.

Invocation

(Days of Iron and Clay, #1)
Publication date: March 19th 2024
Genres: Paranormal, Romance, Young Adult
There are three things I know without question.
One: demons are real.
Two: humans make awful mistakes that get them in demonic trouble more often than you’d think.
And three: I’m the only one who can help them.
I straddle the line between the mortal and spiritual realms every day. People might think they’re two different places, but they’re not. They lay on top of each other. It’s messy, and that’s why so many people need my help. Since I was little, I’ve been called all kinds of names—unusual, abnormal, even insane. Which is fitting, since they keep throwing me in to mental facilities. I’ve been in and out of them my entire life.
But no matter what people say, no matter what I’m risking, I will always help those in need.
Because there’s an endless war carrying on all around us, every minute of every day. One that can’t be seen by mortal eyes. But I can see it, the spiritual battle for mortal souls, and I’m working hard to make sure my father is on the losing side. He — Astaroth, Satan’s general— is why I can do this. He’s why I’m not normal. I can’t have friends, a life, or a boyfriend. I won’t be selfish enough to drag someone into this fight. But I’m not lonely. Not exactly. I have my mom. She’s my rock, my best friend, my partner. She helps me do what needs to be done, and she’s never afraid when it feels like I’m always afraid.
Because I hear my father whispering my name each night, his taunts echoing through the spiritual realm. He’s hunting me, and I know the day will come when I must face him again.
Every portal I open could be the one that finally pulls me back to Hell, and I wonder if I will brave enough, strong enough, good enough to fight him.
My name is Samantha Catherine Lopez, and I am Nephilim. This is my story.
**Fans of the Alpha Girls series will love this new series set in the same world, with a few familiar faces, but you DO NOT have to have read a single word of the Alpha Girls series to enjoy Samantha’s story.
Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks
EXCERPT:The heat from the fires of Hell were burning my feet. I needed to close the portal, but I needed to get up to the other side before I did. And then there was a warmth—not like the burning heat from Hell—but something else—something soothing—and I knew what I had to do.
I had to get rid of the tie.
I couldn’t cut it—I’d tried that so many times—but I could shove it away. I could lessen its effects. I’d even burned it out once.
If it worked before, it could work now.
I blocked everything out except for the feeling of the tie that bound me to my father. It was always there—a leash of fire that wrapped around my body, my soul—thicker than any other tie I’d seen before on a living person. But it wasn’t just a demon-mortal tie. It was a father-daughter tie.
The tie connecting us grew hotter, burning, and I focused everything I had on burning it out.
I let my outrage fuel me. The outrage of how this monster—my father—had hunted me my whole life, tortured my mother, dragged me to Hell, and made it impossible for me to have any kind of innocent childhood.
He’d robbed me over and over of everything good.
Not this time. He wouldn’t win this time.
He laughed. He actually laughed at me. “I gave you life. I gave you your powers. Just as I give, I can take it all away.”
No. I didn’t believe that.
And I wasn’t quitting. I wasn’t listening to him.
Screw him.
I pulled again, but it didn’t work. He started to say something about how I was a failure, but screw him. Screw failing. Screw everything but sending him back to Hell.
But my mouth was dry and I wanted to throw up and my body was starting to feel weaker and my arms started to shake.
An evil, deep rumbling noise had fear skittering along my skin.
I was getting too tired, too quickly.
And then it clicked.
He wasn’t just controlling me. He was draining my strength through our tie.
Fast.
I had to be faster.
Quickly, as quick as I could, I pictured the tie knotting and pulling tight, cutting off my father’s influence. I pictured it again—forcing my will on the tie.
Knotted and pulled tight.
Knotted and pulled tight.
Slowly, with every knot, I felt my father’s control lessening. Just enough so that I could think and—
Where was Eli?
That one thought broke through.
It was a tiny crack, but it was enough.
“Eli!” I screamed along the spiritual realm as loud and with as much force as I could. I tried to pull myself up, but my arms were too tired.
The demons below me started screaming and moving faster. They knew who I’d called, and they knew what he could do to them.
Something hit my feet.
I jerked my leg away, and my hands slipped and—
Phoenix’s face suddenly above mine.
He was now hanging halfway through the portal. The only thing keeping me from dropping was his grip on my wrists. “Samantha. Please! Can you hear me?” His voice was deep and calm as it washed over me.
“I can now. Thank you.”
“Pull me up. Now. Hurry.”
“On the count of three. Okay?” He smiled. Even while all this insanity was happening—he smiled and it calmed me again and gave me confidence.
Why? I couldn’t say. But it did.
“One…Two…Three.” He pulled a little, and then all of a sudden, jerked me up, and I was lying on top of him.
“Thanks.” I gasped out the word and let my body relax against his for a second.
“You’re welcome.”

Guest PostStep aside narrative fiction, there’s a newgame in town
By Sari Karplus
Squirrelsin Antarctica is not your traditional narrativefiction. It’s both non-narrative and non-linear, and teaches readers animaginative word game through the pages and examples of the book. Squirrelsare, in fact, just one of the 30+ animal characters– each page introducing anew animal. Likewise, Antarctica is a metaphoric and literal icy island in themiddle of a multitude of other locales in the book. What I love about sharingthis story with kids– is that they learn about different animals and places butit doesn’t feel like learning. Thepages are chock full of funny rhymes and illustrations that keep the readerengaged and hopefully laughing.
I challenge you to look out for the fun littlevisual gags that the illustrator, Todd Wilkerson, baked into the pages. Like onthe page where the gopher is golfing in Greenland, the judgemental whale fromthe book’s cover makes another appearance. Or on the skunk inside an elevatortrying not to stink– check out the skunk’s distressed, bloodshot eyes. He’s onthe brink! One of my favorites is the sloth running a marathon who has a fulltwo-page spread and still isn’t even at mile one.
The importance of books and stories areunquestionable, but a book that sets out to inspire creativity in young mindsholds a particularly valuable space in this world as well. Creativity andimagination are the basis for good problem-solving and STEAM learning. In Squirrels in Antarctica, the name of thegame is coming up with animals in unexpected places. So to do this, little oneswill learn to get comfortable using two known things to come up with animprobable combination. This is the exact skillset inventors must have. Sowhile we’re laughing and having fun, aspiring writers and scientists arestarting to warm up those brilliant little brains.

Interview with Sam HirschmannWhat is the most surprising thing you discovered while writing your book(s)? How easily writing it came to me. It showed me that there doesn’t need to be any forcing when it comes to creativity and inspiration - you just have to be open and ready to listen!
Does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? If so, why?
The main character of Sam holds a very special place in my heart as she reminds me of my own inner child who is always telling me to have more fun being myself and to always shine my light as big and bright as I wish. Even as an adult I find it’s easy to get frozen by the thought of others' opinions that I always need to hear this message periodically.
What is the key theme and/or message in the book?
The message I wish to land on every reader’s heart is that we’re all born to “shine” and we all have a unique light to shine out into the world. This light when shown and expressed freely (by simply being ourselves) will not only make you feel good, but it also inspires those around you to do the same.
What’s the most courageous thing you’ve ever done?
Leaving my career in finance to go to acting school and start something from ground zero. A lot of my friends and family thought I was crazy (including myself!) to leave a great and secure job and one I had worked so hard at. However, I knew the job wasn’t aligned with my authentic self and it would never bring me true joy. Making that scary jump ultimately ended up being the best decision I ever made. I met my husband in acting school and grew so much as a person…also, let’s just say I wouldn't have ever written this book!
What do you like about audiobooks?
What I like most about listening to audiobooks is the ability to go on a walk while listening to a great book. Nothing transports me more than when I’m on a walk outside in nature while listening to a story.
Meet the Author:Sam Hirschmann is the creator and writer of Sam Says: You Are Born to Shine, and is a true dancer of life. After playing Division I volleyball and working on the trading floor in New York City, she decided to take an acting class, which Sam thanks for sparking her journey into seeing life in color. She left finance to study acting at the William Esper Studio, which took her down the path of finding her true self and how to authentically let her light shine in every situation. While pursuing acting, Sam began teaching Breathwork classes and sharing her insight on social media in hopes of inspiring others to find their joy within and to let their inner light shine.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo
EXCERPT:A rumbling sound filled my ears and the ground started tilting and rolling. The light hanging over the dining room table began swaying and the wood mini-blinds rubbing against the windows sounded like fingernails on a chalkboard. “Amber?” Ava grabbed my hand and held on tight.
“Don’t worry. It’s just an earthquake.” Growing up in Southern California you got used to this kind of thing. “Remember what they taught you at school? Drop, cover, and hold on?”
I pulled her toward the dining room table to hide beneath it, although I was positive by the time we got into position the quake would be over.
We were ten steps away from the table when Ava stopped walking. She yanked my arm and started pulling me backward, toward the family room. I heard the crash of glass breaking on the kitchen tile and was glad I had flip-flops on. Our family portrait fell from the dining room wall, the glass splintering from the black frame sent shards of glass flying across the room. A small piece caught my ankle, sending a sting up my leg.
“Knock it off, shrimp. We need to get under the table right now!” While I had been in several earthquakes, this felt different. It wasn’t slowing or stopping, like I thought it would. I didn’t want to admit it, but I was scared. Could this be the “big one” grownups talked about?
Instead of letting me lead her toward the dining table, Ava began pulling me harder toward the family room. With my feet sliding on the slick tile, I couldn’t stop.
“What’s that?” I had never heard my sister screech like that before, so I turned around to see what she was talking about.
The small fragments of the Sweet Treats board game were hovering in midair, swirling in a circle, going faster and faster. The floor tilted us toward the flying pieces, and we were slipping toward the growing whirlwind. The edge of the vortex was expanding outward at a rapid rate, while the center was a dark, black hole. It looked like a giant vacuum hose, and it was sucking us toward it.
My terrified sister started screaming, clinging to my legs. “Do something, Amber!”
I started shrieking as I tripped over Ava, and we were pulled head first into the middle of the vortex.
