"I grew up on the front row of my father's small-town movie theatres, watching horror and science-fiction films."

So says Charles Justus Garard.

"My favorites were such films as IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE and THE CREATURE OF THE BLACK LAGOON (both in 3-D). The only time-travel sci-fi time travel I remember seeing in Dad's theatres was WORLD WITHOUT END and BEYOND THE TIME BARRIER. So why did I become interested in time travel? Maybe it was because of my obsession with my past and the wish that I could change it in order to create more pleasant memories. That's one for a shrink to deal with, you might be thinking.

"However, I also sketched comic books that resembled some of the horror and sci-fi films I'd seen and even, with friends, cranked out

The problem is getting past excuses such as working on other projects and, instead, putting my ass into the chair in front of the computer. It used to be any notepad or journal, but the computer takes most of the heat. It is easy to become distracted in trying to promote one's writing (novels, in my case) -- particularly when an idie or self-publisher must do it all himself/herself. The one traditionally published book that I wrote was a critical work as part of my PhD requirement -- a dissertation that became internationally available -- but fiction writing is my first love.(less)

I remember coming across a journal that I was working on while in the seventh grade (elementary school) where I had scribbled in barely recognizable prose, that maybe someday I should be a writer. I also liked to draw comic books -- even red-and-green 3-D comic books. I think I just wanted to tell stories, as derivative as some of those early efforts were. The best thing about being a writer . . . is being a writer.(less)

Charles Garard I would like to recommend the ebook NO BULLSH**T GUIDE TO SELF-PUBLISHING by Jennifer Ciotta. She has suffered through the difficulties of self-publishing her ebooks (and print books)and shares with us her errors and warnings in straight-forward no-holds-barred prose. She is not only brutally honest but humorous.

For those of us who have stuck our foot in the door of traditional publishing and been turned down because a certain agent did not find our effort to his or her taste, this is a viable alternative. As they said in the 1960s, she "tells it like it is."

At the rock bottom price as an ebook, what can you lose? At the end of her book, which I read on my Kindle, she supplies her contact email address on Goodreads. There she proves to be as warm and helpful as her photo in POETS AND WRITERS is lovely.

She reminds me of two other Jennifers: Jennifer Connelly and Jennifer Lawrence (whom I had a crush on until she bleached her hair blonde). This Jennifer is not an actress, however, but an intelligent and gutsy author. Her book is worth your time. As we know, as authors we have such precious little of it.
