Generally, when I'm experiencing writer's block, it's that I can't figure out how to write a certain chapter or explain a certain character. When that happens, I write what I can. So I might go out of order and writer another chapter of the same story, or I might write in another story that I have ideas for. The brain works like a muscle, and once I get it warmed up on something else, I find that ideas come to me for that specific thing a lot easier.(less)

The best part of that to me is that there are really no hard and fast rules. As long as you're not stealing it, you can make up anything you want. That doesn't mean it'll sell, but you're free to do what you want with stories and characters, and to experiment with stuff that nobody has dared touch before. That's exciting.(less)

It's fine. I like the western stuff and it's pretty funny. But it doesn't have a lot of staying power and ultimately I think every previous Mistborn book is better. Its brevity works against it in that regard, I think - not as much time to develop mo ...more

I still think this is really, really great. Of the four Sanderson books I've reread so far (this one plus the first three Mistborn books), this one is probably the best. When I read the Stormlight books the first time, Oathbringer was my favorite, so ...more

“People think focus means saying yes to the thing you've got to focus on. But that's not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I'm actually as proud of the things we haven't done as the things I have done. Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things.”
