Katherine Flannery Dering, author of Shot in the Head: A Sister’s Memoir, A Brother’s Struggle (Bridgeross Communications; 2014) is the second of ten children. Her younger brother, Paul, was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 16. The author took on a more intense role in his care after her parents death and especially after he developed lung cancer. She found herself very moved by the experience and writes about caring for her brother in hopes that it will enlighten the public on the role of mental illness as well as its impact on caregivers.

Katherine holds an MFA from Manhattanville College, a BA from Le Moyne College, an MA from the University of Buffalo and a MBA from the University of Minnesota at Duluth.

Dear Katherine: We have never met. But after reading your book this
summer, I feel we have. Yours is the first non-fiction book I have ever
read which compelled me to stay up all night reading in order to finish
it. That has happened previously with fiction, maybe 4 or 5 times, things
like Grisham, or Ian Fleming, or recently "Gone Girl". But
with fiction, after finishing bleary-eyed in early dawn, I always felt
like "what a wasted loss of sleep" - a bit like a hang-over.
Not so with Shot in the Head. It was spell-binding, and also redemptive
and constructive. It must have been a difficult book to write - with the
pain and family personalities presenting many fine lines of just what to
say and what not to say. The book is sensitive, but never mushy. It is
serious, but not oppressive, in fact has absolutely warmly funny moments
which make one smile. It shows a wonderful resolution in your mind/soul
between what life throws at humans and what humans can do about it (or not do about it). The book presents almost a spiritual microcosm/parallel of the lessons others learn (or not)from either having or dealing with
various diseases, be it schizophrenia,, Parkinson's, cancer, or
alcoholism. Society deals with certain diseases better than others and
can be both fearful and judgmental. Your book should prove a huge comfort to everyone who has schzophrenia, or has loved ones who have it.

You have a gift of writing. I will want to read your next book. Don't worry about making it perfect. Your gift will shine through.

I liken writing a book to playing a musical instrument. You can really enjoy going to the symphony, perhaps love the sound of the oboe or French horn. But just because you appreciate the sound doesn't mean you can pick up a musical instrument and play it. You need help with your first steps. And mostly, you need to practice.
So give it a try. Don't be discouraged if your first attempts are the literary equivalent of a squawking, squeaking horn played by a third grader. Ask for help. Take a class. Try again. It will get better. And you will enjoy the journey.(less)

Six Things I learned about Mental Illness while caring for my Brother

Over the past year since I published my memoir (Shot in the Head, A Sister's Memoir, a Brother's Struggle) about caring for my brother Paul, who suffered from schizophrenia, I have encountered several misguided but firmly held beliefs that get in the way of understanding our fellow humans who suffer from a severe brain disorder. Here are just a few:

1. If people with serious mental illness (SMI) wo Read more of this blog post »

“Many questions come to mind. How influenced by contemporary religions were many of the scholars who wrote the texts available today? How many scholars have simply assumed that males have always played the dominant role in leadership and creative invention and projected this assumption into their analysis of ancient cultures? Why do so many people educated in this century think of classical Greece as the first major culture when written language was in use and great cities built at least twenty-five centuries before that time? And perhaps most important, why is it continually inferred that the age of the "pagan" religions, the time of the worship of female deities (if mentioned at all), was dark and chaotic, mysterious and evil, without the light of order and reason that supposedly accompanied the later male religions, when it has been archaeologically confirmed that the earliest law, government, medicine, agriculture, architecture, metallurgy, wheeled vehicles, ceramics, textiles and written language were initially developed in societies that worshiped the Goddess? We may find ourselves wondering about the reasons for the lack of easily available information on societies who, for thousands of years, worshiped the ancient Creatress of the Universe.”
