The Light We Almost Lost | Free Prequel Novella

There’s something about Alaska that calls to the soul. The stillness. The raw beauty. The sense that you can start over and become who you were meant to be. When I was growing up in Alaska, I often heard people say, ‘Everyone here is running from something.’ I find that to be a bit negative, given that I write uplifting, wholesome stories with happily ever after endings. So when I partnered with Susan May Warren and Sunrise Publishing to craft this brand-new series, we took a different approach: What if our fictional friends (who are often broken-hearted) showed up in Redemption looking for healing and second chances?

Keep reading to learn more about The Light We Almost Lost and how you can start reading your copy today.

Welcome to Redemption, Alaska

The Light We Almost Lost is a free prequel novella written to introduce readers to my brand-new five-book series called Welcome to Redemption, Alaska. Before the first full-length novel releases on December 23, 2025, I wanted to give readers a unique glimpse at this rugged Alaskan small town and the flawed yet relatable characters featured in each book.

Christian small-town romance prequel set in AlaskaAbout the Story

She called him “Bible-banger Binford.” He called her cruel. Five years later, the last thing she expects is for his seaplane to land on her lake. Or for him to claim her sanctuary belongs to him.

Tisha McDowell has spent five years trying to forget Chase Binford and the cruel way she mocked his faith in college. She fled to Alaska, found God, and finally made peace with herself in a borrowed lakeside cabin—until he shows up with big plans and a family claim to her home.

Her old college nemesis. The steadfast believer she tormented with vicious nicknames and public humiliation. He’s devastatingly handsome now, frustratingly noble, and wants the same lakeside cabin that’s become her only sanctuary.

When their enemies-to-lovers chemistry ignites, Chase discovers she’s no longer the sharp-tongued beauty queen who mocked his faith. She’s become the woman of strength and belief he always knew she could be. But his wounded heart won’t let him trust what he sees—and then a family crises back home threaten to tear her away from Alaska forever.

Now Chase must choose between the cabin he’s loved since childhood and the woman he’s falling for. And Tisha faces an impossible decision: fight for the home that saved her, or sacrifice everything for the family that needs her—including her last chance at love with the man whose heart she once broke.

The Light We Almost Lost is perfect for readers who love Debbie Macomber, Rachel Hauck, Rachel Hanna and Becky Wade.

This enemies-to-lovers Christian romance explores forgiveness, redemption, and the courage to start again. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of coastal Alaska, The Light We Almost Lost introduces readers to the town of Redemption, where broken hearts come to heal.

And best of all? This prequel novella is free for a limited time!
(But only for the next few weeks—then it sails away like a seaplane on Tisha’s lake).

Download The Light We Almost Lost and start your journey to Redemption, Alaska today.

Coming Soon: The Welcome to Redemption, Alaska Series

Three full-length novels will follow in the first five months of 2026 (books 4 and 5 will release in fall of 2026 and spring of 2027). Each small-town romance features one of the McGuires and celebrates faith, resilience, and the beauty of second chances.

If you love:
💞 Enemies-to-lovers, grumpy/sunshine, sibling’s best friend, childhood sweethearts
🏡 Small-town charm
🙏 Stories of faith and forgiveness
🌲 And sweeping Alaskan landscapes

…then you’ll feel right at home in Redemption, Alaska.

So grab your cozy blanket (and your tissues), download The Light We Almost Lost while it’s still free, and get ready to fall in love with these new Christian fiction books.

Frequently Asked QuestionsIs this story really free?

Yes, The Light We Almost Lost is free …but only for a limited time. Once book 1 in the new series, The Other Side of Goodbye, is published then the novella will no longer be free. So download your copy now.

Do I need to read the prequel first?

The Light We Almost Lost is a standalone story. However, it introduces Tisha McDowell, who is the heroine of the first book in the series, so readers will have a more complete picture of her backstory when they read The Light We Almost Lost and then The Other Side of Goodbye. Also, there’s a sneak peek of The Other Side of Goodbye at the end of the novella, so really, grabbing the prequel for free is a win-win.

Are Tisha and Chase featured in any other books?

Tisha is a secondary character in The Firefighter’s Twins, which is my first Love Inspired novel.

As the weather turns cooler, nights grow longer, and holiday decorations fill the stores, there’s nothing better than curling up with a good book and a warm drink. If your perfect fall night looks like fuzzy socks, a cinnamon candle, and a love story that’s more heartwarming than steamy, this list is for you. These seven sweet, wholesome romances bring the small-town charm, crunchy-leaf strolls, and slow-burn chemistry—with zero spice and maximum cozy. Grab your favorite mug and let’s build your fall TBR list.

Cup of coffee and candle on rustic wooden serving tray in the cozy bed with blanket. Knitting warm woolen sweater in the autumn weekend, top view. How I Chose These Books

-Wholesome and slow-burn: delicious chemistry without explicit scenes

-Feel-good tone: low angst, yet lots of heartwarming scenes

-Cozy fall vibes: small towns, seasonal settings, or it’s a story that’s perfect to curl up with

-Sports romance without the spice: ’tis the season for football and professional baseball

-Trope spotlight: quick content notes so you can pick your perfect match

7 Wholesome Romance Books

The Second Story Bookshop

Denise Hunter | Available October 7, 2026

This is a compelling, second-chance romance featuring a bookstore that’s about to fail, and the hero and heroine drawn together to save it when they are both bequeathed partial ownership. This is a wholesome, kisses-only romance that flip flops between the couple’s high school sweetheart past and the present day. There’s a close-knit family involved, small-town politics, an adorable dog and a standoffish bookstore cat. Highly recommend!

Get your copy of The Second Story Bookshop here.

First Love, Second Draft

Becca Kinzer | Available in e-book, paperback and audio

Sweet, wholesome second-chance romance between a hero and heroine who are divorced from one another. There’s tons of witty banter, she’s struggling with writer’s block, and he is a professional baseball player whose career did not go the way he planned.

I love a no-spice sports romance. This is a such an enjoyable read! I’m especially fond of this one because Becca made the Seattle Mariners a successful team and as a huge Mariners fan, I sort of feel like this was foreshadowing of their current success.

Get your copy of First Love, Second Draft here.

Sense & Suitability

Pepper Basham | Available October 7, 2025

I adore Pepper’s books and I can’t wait to read this sweet, enemies-to-lovers Regency romance. Here’s what one reader, Helen F., had to say:

“With sweet, faith-filled themes of family, forgiveness, and self-discovery, Sense and Suitability offers a delightful balance of heart, humor, and historical flair. Perfect for fans of Austen retellings, clean historical romance, and feel-good love stories with thoughtful characters, this novel is a lovely addition to your TBR.”

Click here to add Sense & Suitability to your fall must-read list.

A Ferry Merry Christmas

Debbie Macomber | Available October 21, 2025

It’s never too early to start reading Christmas novels. Debbie Macomber is an auto-buy for me, so I pre-ordered this sweet, wholesome romance ages ago. Characters stranded on a ferry in Puget Sound during the holidays sounds so intriguing.

Get your hands on this delightful new release today.

The Lady’s Mine

Francine Rivers | Available now in e-book, paperback and audio

The Lady’s Mine remains one of my favorite historical romance novels that I’ve ever read. I’ll never pass up a chance to recommend it. Witty banter, compelling story, California mining town in the 1870’s, slow-burn wholesome romance…swoon. I could go on and on. Trust me. You’ll love this one.

Get your copy here.

Steinbeck (The Minnesota Kingstons Book 5)

Susan May Warren | Available now in e-book and paperback

Calling all edge-of-your-seat romantic suspense fans! If you haven’t started this epic series, I highly recommend diving right on in. Each book can be enjoyed as a stand alone. But why not start at the beginning?

I’m thoroughly enjoying Steinbeck’s story. Pretty sure he’s my new favorite hero of Susie’s.

The Firefighter’s Twins

Heidi McCahan | Available now

If you love sweet wholesome romance books featuring handsome single dads, twins, a pumpkin patch and a close-knit family, then I highly recommend my very first Love Inspired novel. This remains one of my favorite stories that I’ve come up with so far.

Get your copy here.

Conclusion

Fall is cozy reading season, and the perfect time to embrace gentle happily-ever-afters. Whether you’re in the mood for a pumpkin patch meet-cute or a Regency-era slow-burn, these sweet romances will keep you warm long after the last page.

Tell me in the comments: which cozy read are you starting with?

Love, Fireworks and Small-Town Charm: 7 Must-Read Patriotic Romances

If you love to read patriotic small-town romance novels that celebrate Fourth of July parades, Founder’s Day festivals, and heroes and heroines who’ve proudly served in the military, then this list of 7 books is just for you!

They celebrate community. From Fourth of July parades to small-town festivals, these books capture the joy of coming together to honor traditions and celebrate the things that unite us.They honor our heroes. Many of these stories feature veterans or first responders—brave men and women who have served their country or community and are now trying to find their own happily-ever-after.They’re filled with hope. These stories remind us that love and faith can overcome even the toughest challenges, whether it’s a family feud, a catastrophic event, or learning to trust and embrace a second chance at love.

So grab a glass of sweet tea, settle into your favorite reading nook, and get ready to fall in love with these seven small-town romances.

Patriotic small town romance novels

Why Patriotic Romances Are So Special

For me, I’m attracted to those iconic symbols of Americana: the red, white and blue bunting draped from porch railings. Popsicles and hot dogs. A flag-waving crowd lining Main Street for Fourth of July and Founder’s Day festivals. These elements provoke a sense of patriotism and gratitude for our freedom, which is why patriotic romances are so special.

When I look for a must-read patriotic romance novel, characters who’ve struggled (or maybe are still struggling) with the grittier aspects of life really appeal to me. I like a juicy story with characters who are flawed yet loveable and genuinely need each other to move forward and find redemption.

And let’s not forget the sparks—both the romantic kind and the firework-filled skies! These books are the perfect way to celebrate love, life, and the country we call home.

7 Beach Reads About Healing and Second Chances

A beach read about healing and second chances, especially if the book is set by the sea, provides the ideal summer reading experience. If you’re searching for your next emotional, uplifting summer novel then these 7 beach reads might be for you.

Ocean waves at sunrise - inspiration for beach reads about healing and second chancesWhy We Love Healing Stories Set by the Sea

There’s something about the ocean that has always appealed to me. Sometimes I wonder if it’s in my genes because my parents and grandparents enjoyed going to the beach too. Is it the endless horizon? Or the soothing sound of the waves? For me, I’m captivated by the sense that I’m so small and yet the God of the universe created all that I can see and touch. Each new day at the beach offers a renewed sense of wonder and possibility.

It’s no surprise so many beautiful stories of healing, second chances, and forgiveness are set by the sea.

If you’re longing for a stack of emotional, heartfelt beach reads, here are seven favorites that will sweep you away. Each one explores themes of fresh starts, mending old wounds, and finding hope. Even when life gets messy.

Gentle note for sensitive readers:
These stories are compelling, emotional and sometimes gritty. They may include content that isn’t ideal for every reader. Please read with care and check content warnings as needed.

7 Beach Reads About Healing, Second Chances and ForgivenessThe Last Love Note by Emma Grey: there are elements of this novel that are tough to read but Emma Grey is also delightfully funny. And Hugh. Oh my word! I still think about him sometimes. Swoon-worthy indeed!Love, Unscripted by Denise Hunter: This sweet romance features a small-town North Carolina girl who has written a novel that is about to become a movie. Except she isn’t thrilled with the casting selection for the hero’s role. There’s a fake dating trope (which I adore), a swoon-worthy hero, plenty of clever plot twists, and a satisfying happy ending. One Southern Summer by Heidi McCahan: this was my first southern women’s fiction novel and loosely inspired by my experience dating a closeted gay man. There’s a geriatric matriarch who is still one of my favorite characters I’ve ever created. If you like books about sisters, secrets, and family drama as well as stories that feature healing and second chances, I think you’ll enjoy this one.Sweet Melody by Heidi McCahan: a struggling bakery owner, a disillusioned songwriter and an adorable small town by the sea…what’s not to love? I wrote Sweet Melody because I wanted to create a summer read featuring a few of my favorite things. The Islanders by Meg Mitchell Moore: I’m pretty sure I’m obsessed with Block Island, which is why I picked up this book. For me, Meg Mitchell Moore creates the most interesting and complex characters. I read her novels to learn how to be a better writer. She’s brilliant!Summer at the Cape by RaeAnne Thayne: This cover captured my attention and I couldn’t resist reading it. Excellent writing, relatable characters and frankly, I couldn’t put it down. A wonderful story about healing, second chances and forgiveness.Memory Lane by Becky Wade: amnesia, romance and a coastal community in Maine? Yes, please. Highly recommend the entire Sons of Scandal series. Becky is a fantastic storyteller.Let’s Chat

Celebrating 11 Years of Sweet Small-Town Romance Books

It’s hard to believe, but this month marks 11 years since I published my first sweet small-town romance book. When I look back, I’m in awe of God’s faithful provision. My heart overflows with gratitude, joy, and so much love. Love for every story told, every character who got their second chance and found their happily ever after, and especially for every one of you who has come along on this wild ride.

Keep scrolling for an update on my writing life + an opportunity to read an advanced copy of my next release.

Over 250,000 Books—Thanks to YOU!

We aren’t supposed to talk about numbers in this industry: how much an author receives when they sign a contract, how big (or how small) a royalty check is, how many books you have to sell to hit The Lists … until one publisher tried to buy another publisher and then the tea started to spill. All of a sudden, we were all talking about numbers because frankly, some of the data was appalling. You can take a deeper dive into all of that if you’d like. The internet is packed full of juicy opinions.

My point is simply this. Sometimes we need to drag the truth out into the light because there’s something worth celebrating. Together, we’ve reached an incredible milestone. More than 250,000 copies of my books are out there in the hands and hearts of readers. That’s a quarter of a million times someone has chosen to escape to a charming small town, to root for couples in need of a second chance, and to believe in the promises of our good, good Father. My writing career is a testament to the fact that God is faithful, He cultivates the dreams He plants in our hearts, and that there is a place in the bookselling landscape for sweet small-town romance books.

To each and every one of you—whether you’ve read one book or every single one—thank you. Your loyalty, your reviews, your emails and social media comments, and your word-of-mouth recommendations have made my dream possible. I am truly blessed by this community of women who love heartfelt romance and uplifting, hopeful stories.

Celebrating Sweet Small-Town Romance

Why small towns? Because there’s nothing quite like the feeling of coming home, is there? Whether it’s a cozy Main Street café serving homemade pie, a coffee shop with vintage lights crisscrossing the pergola, neighbor who knows your name and doles out sound advice, or the joy of a second chance at love, small-town romance novels let us believe in fresh starts. I write for women like you—women who know that real love is built on trust, respect, and a heaping serving of grace.

If you’ve ever cheered as wounded hearts found healing, or swooned as two people discovered they were made for each other then these sweet, uplifting stories are for you. They’re for anyone who’s ever needed redemption, or who believes that there’s always hope for a happily ever after just around the bend.

Two Gorgeous New Book Covers

Coincidentally, my eleventh authorversary syncs up with the cover reveals for my next two small-town romance books. I can’t wait for you to meet the heroes and heroines featured in A Winter of Sweet Secrets and Lost Alaskan Memories, which is the second book in my Opportunity, Alaska miniseries. Both book were extremely challenging to write for a variety of reasons, so it will be extra rewarding to get these stories into your hands in just a few months.

Illustrated cover of man and woman holding hands with young child and walking through snow beside evergreen trees in Alaska.Behind the Scenes: Writing (and Rewriting!) a 5-Book Series

This year has stretched me as a writer in ways I never expected. I’m deep in the process of writing and rewriting my five-book series for Sunrise Publishing. I’ll be honest: it hasn’t always been easy! I’m working with Susan May Warren to relaunch a series around one of the first stories I ever wrote, which was published as a novella. This particular heroine, Tisha McDowell, was also a secondary character in my first Love Inspired novel, The Firefighters’ Twins. It’s super fun to ‘hang out’ with fictional friends I created a decade ago. But at the same time, crafting small-town romance that feel gritty and authentic, yet hopeful and uplifting—especially in a world that sometimes feels anything but—is a huge challenge.

But every time I get stuck, I remember why I started: to give you stories that feel like a delightful escape, that remind us all we’re not alone, and that love can find us when we least expect it. Also, it’s worth mentioning that I prayed hard for this opportunity. I mean, to the point that I think God maybe just gave me what I wanted so I’d stop asking. Ha!

All kidding aside, thank you for your patience and encouragement as I partner with Susie and the team at Sunrise to make these books the very best they can be. I’m eager for you to get reacquainted with Tisha and the whole gang from the early years of my writing career. I think you’ll be surprised to see what she’s been up to.

Want to Be an Early Reader?

Here’s something special for my most loyal readers—you! I’m looking for early reviewers for A Winter of Sweet Secrets. I just need you to fill out this brief form. Space is limited, so don’t delay. If you’re selected, you’ll hear from me shortly.

What to Expect from Me in 2025: A Year of Creativity and Connection

As we step into 2025, I’m filled with gratitude and excitement for what’s ahead. This promises to be my most creative year yet—a season of intense focus, new stories, and meaningful connections with my readers. Late last year, I signed contracts for nine books. Yes, nine! That means I’ll be deeply immersed in writing for much of this year, bringing to life stories that I hope will entertain, uplift, and inspire you.

How fitting that when I took the Word of the Year quiz from Dayspring, my word was “create.” It’s a word that perfectly encapsulates this year’s journey, as I lean into this calling to create stories that reflect faith, love, family, and hope—themes that resonate so deeply with my heart and yours.

A white mug with the word create written in black print. In the background are palm trees, a dock and boats in the water. Two Exciting Book Launches in 2025

While I’ll be writing furiously behind the scenes, I’m thrilled to also share two new books with you in the second half of 2025. These stories are near and dear to my heart, and I can’t wait for you to read them.

1. A Winter of Sweet Secrets
This trade-length standalone romance is set in Alaska and releases on September 30, 2025. It features the grumpy-sunshine trope, family feuds, and a missing iconic recipe that holds the key to healing old wounds. Set against a breathtaking winter backdrop, this story is full of heart, humor, and sweet surprises. If you love stories of redemption and love blooming in the most unexpected places, this one’s for you.

2. The Next Chapter in the Opportunity, Alaska Series
Releasing in October 2025, the second book in my Opportunity, Alaska series explores the amnesia trope—a first for me! This story challenged me like no other, and I spent much of 2024 wrestling with how to get it just right. Seeing it come to life will be incredibly rewarding, and I’m excited to share this emotional journey with you. If you’ve been following this series, you won’t want to miss this sweet small-town romance (tentatively titled Lost Alaskan Memories).

A Special Project in the Works

On top of these releases, I’m pitching a dual timeline novel to my agent this week. This story is part Roaring Twenties, part modern-day, and features an incredible but rarely written about North Carolina landmark. I can’t reveal too much yet, but I promise it’s going to be something special. Stay tuned for updates—I’ll be sharing sneak peeks as the project progresses.
