I'm feeling drawn to the turn of the last century, pondering what it might be like to be an East Coast publisher's daughter brought out to run a California ranch. That said, it is still largely unformed and quite a mystery to me.(less)

While it was helpful to read about the time and place where I grew up, it was such a grim book, recording so much trauma. Ultimately, Talbot wrote about politicians. A valuable puzzle piece, but not a comprehensive city portrait.
