From humble beginnings as a projectionist, Ian David Noakes has taken on several feature film and television options as well as writing commissions since writing full-time in 2009. His big breakthrough came when his erotic murder-mystery, Hourglass Heights, achieved a publishing contract. It was later nominated for both the People’s Book Prize as well as the National Book Awards

After a wave of overwhelmingly positive reviews, Noakes experimented with many other genres as well. Most recently, he completed a dramedy pilot called Partners in Crime before adapting it into both a novel and completed series under the auspicious title Fish, Chips & Lubricating Jelly. He has also penned a fun-filled horror novella called The Ancient Lawman.

I'd seen the movie on a number of occasions, but it just happened to be on that night and it got me thinking. I'd already made up my mind that I wanted to write a horror/thriller, but at the time Snake Eyes really tickled my creative thinking. I wanted to write something contained and claustrophobic too, and this movie just inspired me.

Amazingly, Hourglass Heights ended up nothing like Snake Eyes:-) It was my plan to set most of it inside the Hourglass Heights apartment complex, but as I started to write the story it just burst out of the 'contained and claustrophobic' wrapping and started to find its own identity.

So, in answer to your question, the big influences that stand out for me are the men behind the project: Brian De Palma & David Koepp. I've been a huge fan of David Koepp since I started screenwriting many moons ago, and Snake Eyes is just one of many that have made an impact on my writing. Panic Room was a fantastic movie, and a great screenplay.

Even after all these years, I am not sure I have found a way to deal with writer's block. Inspiration can help if it finds me.

I guess I've found a coping mechanism instead. "If it ain't happenin', then I turn of the computer and walk away for a while. Some author push their way through it, but that doesn't work for me. See: Anxiety Disorder! :0)(less)
