Born in Ottawa and schooled for six years in the ghost town of Bennie's Corners, near Almonte, Ont., before his family relocated to Ottawa.
A keen photographer since boyhood, and creator of short-lived mimeographed Boy Scout magazine in an Ottawa high school, his journalism career began on a short-lived weekly newspaper in Belleville, Ont. during mid-1969 break from Loyalist College of Applied Arts and Technology, where he graduated in Communication Arts in 1970, while also working at the daily Intelligencer newspaper as reporter-photographer.
In 1973, joined The Kingston Whig-Standard for 12 1/2 years, including as reporter in Napanee, Picton, Gananoque, then was briefly Assistant City Editor until happily bailing back into reporting.

Spent 18 months as a Ministry of Natural Resources contract media relations officer in Toronto, before joining The Toronto Sun in 1987, where — until retiring in early 2013 — he was a reporter-photographer and feature writer specializing in crime for 10 years, later adding videography and occasional Sun-TV guest reporter stints.
While working full-time, also freelanced in 1970s and '80s for The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, Reader’s Digest, Farm & Country, and since 1976 has been associate editor and a volunteer contributor to County Magazine, Bloomfield, Ont., in Prince Edward County.
Spent the summer in England and Scotland with Commonwealth Press Union as the Canadian on the 1980 Harry Brittain Fellowship, which included Oxford University and University of London lectures, on journalism, politics and world affairs.
Received writing and photography awards, including for crime, agriculture, business and Canadian history writing, the latter for Canadian Stamp News, which he has written for since early 1987, and is the hobby paper's Consulting Editor.
Co-author of Prince Edward County: An Illustrated History, published in 2009 by County Magazine Printshop, Bloomfield, Ont.; How a Colonel Became a Killer in 2012, published by Amazon.com; and author of Camp Picton: Wartime to Peacetime, published in 2013 by County Magazine Printshop.
Wrote the prologue to Steve Campbell’s 1997 Tales from the Back Page, published by County Magazine Printshop, and has contributed articles and photos to several other books since the 1970s. ...more
