RACE GIRL to be released internationally on April 3rd!

Leigh Hutton’s new novel, RACE GIRL –  the third story in best-selling series, The Go Girls Chronicles - will be published digitally by Port Campbell Press and distributed in paperback by Dennis Jones and Associates from April 3rd.

“RACE GIRL will be available around the world as an eBook and print-on-demand paperback, with books hitting the shelves across Australia and in leading tackshops in Canada shortly after,” Hutton said.

“I’m thrilled to be working with the wonderful team at Port Campbell Press and Dennis Jones to finally get this book out to my readers.

“I can’t wait for you to meet Tully and Brandon!”

Fresh on the heels of Michelle Payne’s historic Melbourne Cup win, comes this blockbuster Australian story about a Queensland girl and the ‘race that stops a nation’.

“I have dedicated the book to Michelle Payne, the first female jockey to win the prestigious and iconic Melbourne Cup,” Hutton said. “I finished writing it two weeks before Michelle won. It was a bit freaky, I’m not going to lie! Freaky and thrilling and incredible.

“What an achievement for women in sport, and how exciting that I could then make Michelle my main character’s hero, as she’s one of mine, too.”

Hutton worked closely with horse-welfare charity Equine Action Qld (EAQ) during her research for the novel, as well as with a leading female jockey, a trainer and stable workers. The story is set in real-life locations and even features an EAQ horse named Ziggy.

The Go Girls Chronicles are an exciting new series for young adult and women’s fiction readers craving action, adventure and romance. International Women’s Day feature – the inspirational Go Girl, JENNIFER BALLARD!

What better way to celebrate International Women’s Day than with a Real Life Rev Girl story by an inspiring Go Girl!

Meet the utterly fabulous, Jenny Ballard!

“I saw On Any Sunday with Steve McQueen which for its day was the ultimate in freedom .Bikes, dirt bikes not boring old road bikes, mates, old jeans, any old boots and forests , rivers, deserts what ever — ride where ever you like .Nobody complained .We loved it! It was unusual for girls to be doing this because the guys were only just starting.

“I was pretty basic –all the gear but no idea sort of attitude but I just loved it. We rode along beaches (imagine now days) we camped out- it was a great life

This was all in New Zealand. I moved over to Australia in 1976 and meet up with a guy heavily into Off Road racing .We travelled around Australia visiting places I would never have gone to and meeting a great group people doing the same. .Everyone had an old car, swag or a tent. (A good weekend was to actually arrive and return without having to be towed, boil over -and we all knew how to clutch start a car!)

“With my partner being selected to ride for Australia in the International Six Day Enduro which was held in Europe once per year (about 500 riders from 35 different countries) our round the world travels began. We lived in Europe for four years and the USA for three. My daughter had 18 schools in 12 years. I used to run the race bikes in because it was time consuming. Big 490 Maicos. I flipped a brand new one once and husband sprinted worriedly towards the pile of girlfriend and bike panting ‘Did you break anything on it?’ while I lay thinking who gives a rats about the bloody bike .We had little money in France and had to rely on working in a stunt show to makes ends meet .We travelled to wonderful small French villages where the locals had never seen dirt bikes. Easy to impress them luckily. We used to practise down the railroad sidings and have to stop every time a train roared past .I used to do a to tricks attached on a ladder attached to a bike with a German girl on one side a Spanish on the other a Frenchman who rode the bike .No one spoke English .

“We went to Europe most years for twenty or so years to the world Championships. Places such as Czechoslovakia (when the Iron Curtain was still in place )Italy ,Spain ,Germany Sweden. We learnt the basics of French and German so we could understand our German crew and became I quite a good mechanic .

“I had to learn photography by trial and error to help finance our travels around the world covering races and doing bike tests. I have never really not had a bike since 1980 most borrowed from my husband. I would feel most uneasy if there wasn’t a bike to ride.

“I have two fabulous children. My son Josh has represented Australia at the ISDE several times .My daughter will try anything – loves to bungee sky dive runs triathlons anything but bike riding. I feel very proud of the fact that I organised and ran the first ever Women’s Off Road riding School in conjunction with Stephen Gall and also organised a Women’s Off Road Training camp to field the First Australian Women’s Team to compete in the Olympics of Motorcycling in Europe (the I.S.D.E).That particular year it was in Portugal .Lyndon Heffernan instructed and the event was touted a great success and one of his best ever – saying the girls were an ‘absolute pleasure to teach and had excelled beyond expectations .They were up at 5.30 doing tyre and clutch changes. MX laps, hours of Enduro loops, sleeping in shearing quarters all with the smallest of breaks. Mousse tyre changes went from 12 -15 minutes to 5 in 2 days wonderfully we ended up with big budget from a West Australian shipping Company and the stepped on the podium on their first attempt.

“Later in life I have really enjoyed doing three 5 day Academy of Motocross schools in my fifties. I have ridden the high country in NZ at 60 on a three day Safari doing about 350 kms per day and been on five or so BMW Safaris with my current bike a GS 1200 BMW now in my sixties. You have no idea how hard it is to say that!

“Without motorcycles I would not have most of the friends I have today.

“I have travelled around the world for year’s .Leant basic languages. Tried to understand and fit in with cultures and customs .Have had so many adventures including nearly getting eaten by crocs in Qld .Having Czechoslovakian police trying to arrest me .Bribing Czech petrol station attendants with clothing for fuel and Czech police with stickers. I am keeping fit and getting adrenaline shots with new adventures. I have been scared stiff and almost cried with fear in my helmet but once I had succeeded –what a feeling. It is so much better than that crushing feeling of disappointment when you didn’t and you should have.

“Nowadays I still work in the Motorcycle Industry but am honoured to be the patron of Australia’s Boy Soldiers those young men who fought in WWII at 13 ,14 and 15 years of age. I have for 9 years now been collecting their astonishing stories and am presently trying to find a way to introduce them to all the schools in Australia .The few students who have meet them and heard their stories have been almost over whelmed .I received a letter with four hundred signatures and thank you’s after our first school encounter.

“Be a kind, decent person. Be loyal to your family and friends. Be someone to be counted on. Step out of your comfort zone and kick your heels up ………………………….”

Thank you so much for sharing, Jenny! You have done so much and are a true inspiration to so many girls and women out there :) Keep up the great work, beautiful xx

Real life REV GIRL – TAMARA GRAY, from QUEENSLAND!

“I first started riding on a Honda QR50 at age 3. My older (male) cousins convinced my parents to let me try motocross racing. On a KX60 at age 7 I had my first ever race. I am now 32 and have raced competitively every single year since. I have raced motocross my whole life and found a love for off road/enduro racing over the past five years. I have also dabbled in dirt track, super motard and vintage motocross.

“I have had some success racing over the years; winning multiple state motocross and enduro championships and finishing on the podium at Australian championships. My most rewarding finish to date was a 3rd place finish at the Australian Four Day Enduro in 2012.

“Racing motorcycles has lead me to travel all over Australia, visit New Zealand, Indonesia and the United States of America. I have met some wonderful friends and acquaintances on my travels.

“My love and knowledge for motorcycles also has me employed in the industry. After graduating high school at 17, I moved in to working in various motorcycle dealerships and am currently employed at a wholesaler to the motorcycle industry. It’s a pretty cool job checking out some of the latest products coming on to the scene.

“Motorcycles is more than my life, it’s my identity and I am excited to see where my future takes me. I have no real plans, except for continuing to race and ride for as long as I am having fun!

“I’m looking forward to reading [Rev Girl], as it has had some fantastic reviews by a number of people. I am also keen to support your effort in giving women’s motorcycling recognition and shining a fun positive light on it.”

THANKS SO MUCH for sharing, Tamara! You’re an inspiration to so many girls out there :) Best of luck in your adventures as a #RealLifeRevGirl ~ Leigh xx #girlcanride #girlcanwrite xx
