What is beauty?

I did a google search for “beauty”. The top ten results had images of models and articles on make-up tips to look beautiful.Hardly any surprises there, isn’t it?

In today’s world beauty has sadly become synonymous to the pleasure given by the radiance emanating from a human face or body. William Wordsworth would surely have been highly aggrieved by this development. Nature is the ultimate epitome of beauty. Yet the image of a picturesque landscape isn't the first thing that pops up in our heads the moment we hear the word “beauty”.

I was gazing out of my window and enjoying the beauty of nature. It had rained heavily a while ago and now there was bright sunlight. Rain drops resting on trees and bushes were reflecting the strong sun rays and before me were a million sparkling diamonds. There was no sound around except for the chirpings of birds who were excited to have come out of their refuge and were hopping around merrily.

Suddenly my eye caught some other movement on the narrow lane beside the bushes. I saw a two feet girl walking beside a two and half feet tall boy. I recognized them as the children of our housemaid. The tiny little girl struggled with her long skirt as she tried to keep pace with her brother. Her hair barely reached her neck but she had two pony tails which looked more like two china roses sprouting from her head. Seeing the troubled girl, her brother slowed down his pace and wrapped his hand around his sister’s shoulder. The girl, comfortable as she got now, relaxed and came to her elements. She hopped into a puddle, stayed there for a few seconds and then resumed walking. Then both of them went on their way, jumping and running, holding hands. The boy though just a year elder to his sister, wanted to keep her protected and happy.

At first, those tiny creatures seemed out of place amidst the tall trees flanking the lane. But after observing them, I felt they perfected the scene and made it complete. As I found myself smiling, I felt as if I was looking at the world’s most beautiful thing. Before I got back to work, I decided to write down this experience because I knew as soon as I resumed work, I would also get lost in the same world where beauty is defined by experts who claim to hold its secrets.
