J.B. North grew up in West Texas, where she spent much of her time scouring bookshelves in her aunt’s school library. Her first book, Spark (Legends of the Shifters, Book 1) hit digital shelves (and soon after, Amazon Bestseller lists) when she was 17 years old.

Today, North is braving city life in California's Bay Area with her husband, and is working on a number of upcoming fantasy novels.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for asking the question! I would have to answer the same way most authors do; reading is essential. Read, read, read, and while you're reading, study the structure of the books you love. Their dialogue and descriptions, and the way they build characters, conflict, relationships, and worlds. A story is really a patchwork quilt of everything you absorb from other books, movies, and experiences.

As writers, we have to look at the world in a different way. We have to observe every moment and picture it written on a page. And actually write some of those moments on the page. The more you write, the better you get.

So my advice is to read, observe, and most importantly, to write as often as possible, even if it's just a paragraph a day. I count myself blessed that I got an early start in my career, and I think it's SO cool that you're headed in that direction, too.
