Husband, father, son, brother, Viking, geek, romantic, serious on the outside—silly on the inside. Love laughs, thrills, awe-inspiring wonder, and a mean plate of fiery hot wings. My carnivorous tendencies are cut nicely with a sharp sweet-tooth. In my world, the glass is most often two-thirds full—which is why I like to play in the shadows of the dim that dark thrillers and horror provide; it’s a fun escape from the happy day-to-day.

I enjoy being sucked into a story, led through thrills and oh-my-gods, toward the big reveal that has me striking yes-yes-yes fist pumps or Holy Shit! epiphanies. I’ve also been known to chuckle, loudly, at sophomoric humor from time to time (though I’ll deny it).

Watching an episode of ABC’s Castle got me thinking about writing a murder mystery—only painted with my dark and twisted bent. I had a vision of a body discovered in a barn by two very brave and seasoned hunters. It was a sight that brought these men past their breaking point.

To make the viciousness of the discovery more personal, I made my protagonist a woman. Unfortunately, this is a very common premise—how could I make this story stand out?

The grisly circumstances were assured (it’s what I write after all); the trick was, how, in spite of the horror my main character, Vicki Starr, faced, would I ensure that she could not retreat, no matter how badly she needed to? Then, while sipping a lemonade in the stunning Algarve of Portugal, the paranormal premise of the story began to truly unfold for me, along with Agent Starr’s twisted history.

I felt a powerful angst for my budding new character and took to writing with that terrible basis in mind. I knew I had to finish the story now because I really needed to know how it would all turn out. I’m still shaking my head in disbelief—a wonderful sensation. That’s when I knew I had a story in Pieces of Ivy that I could feel good about sharing with others.

I hope you enjoy reading the story, Pieces of Ivy, as much as I did unearthing it.
